ONE 171 took place today in Qatar, featuring one Kickboxing world title fight and one Muay Thai fight.

Jonathan Haggerty put his ONE Kickboxing Bantamweight World Championship on the line against China’s Wei Rui. Haggerty was looking to rebound from his Muay Thai loss to Superlek, while Wei was riding a 21-fight win streak entering this bout. From the start of the fight, Haggerty established control, working behind a strong jab. He did a good job mixing his strikes and establishing a strong teep to keep Wei at a distance. Wei struggled to close the distance and land much early on. He tried to get more aggressive in the final two rounds, but Haggerty had an answer for everything Wei threw his way. It was a worthy effort by Wei, but it was clear that Haggerty had gotten the better of him, and the judges agreed, giving him the unanimous decision win.

Jake Peacock was a man on a mission in his Muay Thai fight with Shinji Suzuki. He came out pressing the action and mixing his strikes from the opening bell. In the second round, a mix of elbows and knees dropped Suzuki. He made it into the third round, but Peacock smelled blood in the water and immediately came out looking to end the fight. A perfectly placed right hand by Peacock dropped Suzuki, who was able to answer the referee’s count. A low kick dropped Suzuki again, but things were officially over when an elbow dropped Suzuki for the third time in the round and the fourth in the fight. The referee stopped the fight, giving Peacock the TKO win.

ONE Fight Night 28 from Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, featured a main event for the ONE Strawweight Muay Thai World Title fight between champion Prajanchai PK Saenchai and challenger Ellis Barboza.

Things started slow between Prajanchai and Barboza as they were feeling each other out in the first round. Things picked up in the final ten seconds as they both started swinging with bad intentions. After the round ended, a shoving match ensued, and they had to be separated. In the second round, Prajanchai began to get past Barboza’s guard with punches and elbows, bloodying up the left side of the British fighter’s face. The third round was closer than the second as Barboza plotted forward. He found more success, but Prajanchai was still able to connect effectively with his strikes, although at a slower pace. At the end of the round, a late punch landed for Prajanchai, which caused an intense staredown between the two as the referee intervened.

The championship rounds started, and Prajanchai turned things up a notch. An elbow to the top of the head of Barboza opened a cut. Moments later, a right elbow opened up a nasty cut on the left eyelid of Barboza, and the doctor stopped the fight. It was a valiant effort by Barboza, but in the end, Prajanchai was just too fast and too accurate with his strikes.

In the night’s co-main event, Kongthoranee Sor Sommai was looking to add the name of Muay Thai legend Nong-O Hama to his resume. The action picked up fast in this one. Both fighters were letting their fist and feet fly. Nong-O was pressing the action, but Kongthoranee did a great job with his counters. This fight was extremely close, but it seemed that Kongthoranee’s speed and accuracy were the deciding factors. The judges awarded the win by split decision to Kongthoranee.

Sean Climaco and Diego Paez met for the third time in the ring. Climaco won their first encounter by TKO, and their second ended in a draw. Climaco was in control throughout the fight. He pressed the action while peppering Paez with short punches and connecting with kicks. Paez. Surprisingly, one judge scored the bout for Paez, while the other two scored it for Climaco, giving him the split decision win.

Saemapetch Fairtex wanted to avenge his previous knockout loss to Brazil’s Felipe Lobo. Unfortunately for Saemapetch, Lobo has a lethal left hand. After likely taking the first round, the tide changed in the second round after Lobo scored two knockdowns. He finished Saemapetch in the third round after two more knockdowns. Lobo dropped Saempatech four times to pick up the TKO win.

When the second round started, Komawut came out pressing forward while taking some low kicks from Panrit. A right hand from Komawut dropped Panrit less than 20 seconds into the round. After the fight resumed, Komawut walked Panrit down against the ropes and unleashed a flurry of punches that put Panrit down for good.

In the co-main event, Singdomthong Nokjeanladkrabang invested in the body of Nuapet Tded99 early. Vicious punches to the body opened up strikes to the head which had Nuapet on ropes at the end of the first round. Singdomthong continued to punish Nuapet in the second round, but Nuapet refused to back down. Near the end of the round, a head kick from Singdomthong dropped Nuapet, but he was able to recover and make it out of the round. The third round was thrilling as both fighters came out swinging, but Singdomthong started to fade as Nuapet seemed to get stronger. Myanmar’s Vero Nika has signed with ONE Championship. The former Lethwei fighter turned Muay Thai fighter is expected to compete in the ONE Women’s Atomweight Muay Thai and Kickboxing divisions.

Nika is one of Myanmar’s best female Lethwei fighters, having only been defeated once in 18 fights. She made her Muay Thai debut in 2022 and has a record of 18-2. Nine of her wins came by way of (T)KO. She has primarily fought under the Thai Fight banner, with her most recent fight being a win over Argentina’s Florencia Greco in August of 2024.

She trains at Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket, Thailand. She relocated to Thailand after the pandemic as fighting opportunities in Myanmar were scarce in conjunction with the coup d’état that started in 2021.

She is nicknamed “The Fighting Idol” because, in 2018, she appeared on Myanmar Idol, their equivalent to American Idol.

Nika will undoubtedly set her sights on the ONE Women’s Atomweight Muay Thai and Kickboxing Championships. Brazil’s Allycia Hellen Rodrigues holds the ONE Women’s Atomweight Muay Thai Title. Phetjeeja Lukjaoporongtom holds the ONE Women’s Atomweight Kickboxing Title.
