Fight Card for Journey Fight Series IX

The finale for the Journey Fight Series 160lb tournament is set for March 2nd in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Shane Campbell and Sean McKinnon will meet in the main event of Journey Fight Series IX in what is expected to be an exciting fight. Campbell defeated Nate Chambers and Troy Sheridan to punch his ticket to the finale, while McKinnon defeated Rhys Jones and Preston Baptiste to secure his spot. The winner of the bout will be the new WMC 160lb North American Muay Thai Champion.

In addition to the event several of Canada’s top amateurs will be in action on the night. Journey Fight Series IX is the 2nd annual fundraiser event for breast cancer hosted by Journey Fight Series. $5 from each ticket sold will be donated to a breast cancer foundation.

Journey Fight Series VIII Live Play by Play and Results

Journey Fight Series VIII is taking place tonight and will feature the semi-final bouts of their 160lb tournament. For those that can’t watch the stream on GFL.tv you can keep up with all the action here.

The night’s main event will feature a bout between Nate Smandych and Matt Embree. Smandych was originally set to fight Sean Kearney, but an injury forced him out of the fight and Embree stepped in on one weeks notice.

The tournament semi-final bouts will feature Sean McKinnon vs. Preston Baptiste and Shane Campbell vs. Troy Sheridan.

Opening Pro Bout:
Matt Embree vs. Nate Smandych

Rd. 1
Push kick by Embree to start. Leg kick by Embree. Another leg kick by Embree. Smandych taking the center of the ring but not really landing anything. Both fighters looking to feel each other out. Inside leg kick by Smandych. Embree with a teep. Hook by Smandych. Leg kick by Embree and a cross by Smandych. Flying knee by Embree blocked by Smandych. Right by Smandych lands and Embree clinches but nothing happens in the clinch. 10-9 round for Embree.

Sheridan needs to finish the fight in this round if he wants to win. Campbell comes out firing punches and leg kicks. Elbow by Sheridan. Right and then left hook for Sheridan. Preston Baptiste talks upcoming bout with Sean Mckinnon at Journey Fight Series VIII

Preston Baptiste (@OronoJr) will be fighting Sean McKinnon this Saturday at Journey Fight Series VIII. The winner of the fight will advance to face wither Shane Campbell (@ShaolinStyleMMA) or Troy Sheridan (@SheridanMMA) at the Journey Fight Series 160lb tournament final early next year. Preston took time from his busy schedule to answer a few questions for Muay Thai Authority.

MTA: You are fighting Sean McKinnon in the Journey 160lb semi finals. How do you feel about the match up?

Preston: I feel good about it. It’s the fight that I wanted before names were even drawn so I’m glad I got my wish.

MTA: How familiar are you with Sean as a fighter?

Preston: I’m pretty familiar. We’ve fought before as amateurs, and I saw his last fight against Rhys. He hasn’t really changed much since we last fought from what I’ve seen, he’s still very aggressive and he just teeps more than he used to.

MTA: Where do you think you have the advantage in the fight?

Preston: Well if I told you wouldn’t I just be giving away my game plan?!?! Lol just kidding I really don’t care. My speed and footwork are my advantage, along with one other thing that stands out to me but I will not name it just yet… I guess that means I do care???… Next question…

MTA: Are you one to study video on your opponents and how important do you think it is?

Preston: Nah usually I don’t watch my opponents videos. I figure that if I do, and I familiarize myself with a certain style that the fighter had, what will happen if he decides to fight in a style I didn’t prepare for? So to me it’s not really important.

MTA: Can we get a prediction for the fight?

Preston: My prediction is that someone is going to get punched and kicked real hard, and that everyone watching will love it.

MTA: If you make it to the finals do you have a preference on who you face, Troy Sheridan or Shane Campbell?

Preston: I don’t really care who I fight. Shane was someone I looked up to when I was getting started in the amateur scene, but Troy lately has been on a tear lately. Both of these fights would be incredible, so bring on whoever and I’d be ready.

MTA: Who do you think will win the match between Sheridan and Campbell?

Preston: I think Troy might pull off an upset. If he’s anything like me, he’ll be feeding off of the doubters and using it to push through the fight.

MTA: Any words for your supporters?

Preston: I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to my fans, friends and family. Knowing that you guys are there supporting me is what pushes me through the fight. So thank you. Even if you don’t like me, and you watch my fights for some reason, thank you too, cause you wanting me to lose makes me perform even better!

Sean McKinnon talks upcoming Journey Fight Series tourney bout against Preston Baptiste

Sean McKinnon will be looking to advance to the finals of the Journey Fight Series 160lb tournament when he takes on Preston Baptiste (@OronoJr) on November 3, 2012 in Calgary. McKinnon was kind enough to take time off from his busy schedule to answer a few questions about his upcoming fight against Baptiste.

MTA: You are fighting Preston Baptiste in the Journey 160lb semi-finals. How do you feel about the match up?

Sean: I’m feeling good about the match up. I’ve been training hard and think I will fight well.

MTA: How familiar are you with Preston as a fighter, you fought as amateurs correct?

Sean: I’m not super familiar, we fought in 2009…. So we’ve both had plenty of time to grow as fighters. I’m not expecting him to fight the same way he did previously. I don’t watch videos of my opponents, I prefer to prepare by training, and just doing my own thing when I get in the ring. This way I’m not confused if my opponent fights differently than what I expected.

MTA: Where do you think you have the advantage in the fight?

Sean: I feel I’ve trained very hard, like I always do and that will be my biggest advantage.

MTA: You were the last fighter to advance after your first bout was postponed and then ultimately a replacement was found for Daniel Kim. Were you disappointed you didn’t get a chance to avenge your loss to Daniel Kim?

Sean: I was a bit disappointed, it would have been worse if I had no fight at all. Rhys Jones deserves some recognition for stepping in a week before the fight.

MTA: Can we get a prediction for the fight?

Sean: I think it will be an exciting fight, Muay Thai fans won’t want to miss this card.

MTA: If you make it to the finals do you have a preference on who you face, Troy Sheridan or Shane Campbell?

Sean: Trevor lost a close decision to Shane in the past and our Gym would like to get some retribution.

MTA: Who do you think will win the match between Sheridan and Campbell?

Sean: I think it will be a close match, I’m not sure who will win.

MTA: Any words for your supporters?

Journey Fight Series VIII fight card set

The Journey Fight Series 160lb tournament semi-finals are
set to take place November 3 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The nights’
tournament will feature Shane Campbell (@ShaolinStyleMMA) vs. Troy Sheridan (@Sheridan MMA) and Preston Baptiste
(@OronoJr) vs. Sean McKinnon. The winner of each fight will meet at the tournament final
which is right now expected to take place in January.

Headlining the event will be a fight featuring two Canadian young guns in Nate Smandych (@TeamSmand yc h) and Sean Kearny. The bout will
be a re-match from Journey Fight Series VII; Kearney defeated Smandych by split
decision. With the first fight having been so close it will be interesting to
see if either fighter can take full control of this bout or if we are in for
another close fight.

The remainder of the card will feature amateur bouts with some of Canada’s best
prospects.

Results and Recap: Journey Fight Series VII

In the night’s main event, Rhys Jones replaced Daniel Kim on one weeks notice to face Sean McKinnon for the Journey Fight Series 160lb Tournament’s opening round. Jones came out aggressive, but McKinnon did a good job counter fighting and landed solid punches and kicks as Jones pressed the action. McKinnon began to get more aggressive as the fight went on despite success with his counter attacks. In the fourth round it was visible that Jones was starting to fatigue, but he kept on pressing forward. McKinnon took complete control in the fifth round, knocking down Jones with a left hook early in the round Jones answered the referee’s count and went back to trying to press the action, while McKinnon went looking to finish. As the fight approached its final minute, a right hook to the body hurt Jones, who then hunched over as McKinnon unloaded some punches. The referee stepped in and gave Jones a standing eight count. When the action resumed, McKinnon was back on the attack; with less than a minute remaining in the fight, a knee to the body hurt Jones, followed by kicks that had the referee step in to stop the fight.

With the win McKinnon is now set to face Preston Baptiste in the semi-finals of the Journey Fight Series 160lb tournament. The other semi-finals bout will feature Troy Sheridan vs. Shane Campbell. The fights will take place on November 3^rd.

In the night’s co-main event Lindsay Ball and Jessica Gladstone fought five tightly contested rounds. After a feeling out process in the first round the pace picked up and continued to do so with each passing round. Both ladies used their hands and kicks well. Neither was willing to back down and in the end the judges declared the winner Lindsay Ball by split decision.

In the night’s first pro bout Nate Smandych and Sean Kearney fought a close technical affair for five rounds. Both fighters exchanged strikes all five rounds making it a difficult one to score. Kearney was able to connect with more elbows and seemed to control the clinch more, while Smandych pushed the paced and was able to connect with his hands more. The fight was ruled a split decision in favor of Kearney by the judges.

Daniel Kim withdraws from tourney bout with Sean McKinnon, Journey Fight Series looking for replacement

After the June 9th tournament bout between Sean McKinnon and Daniel Kim fell apart at the last minute because Kim’s blood work was not up to date it seemed things were ready to go for a second time. The bout was scheduled for September 8th at Journey Fight Series VII with the winner then fighting Preston Baptiste on November 3rd in the tournament semi-finals. Kim, however, has withdrawn from the bout for unknown reasons and promoter Trevor Smandych in now in search of a replacement.

With only 11 days left before the fight, time is big factor. If you are a pro Muay Thai fighter and would like to step up to fight Sean McKinnon in the opening round of the Journey Fight Series 160lb tournament contact Trevor Smandych by e-mail at tasmandych@shaw.ca.

Sean McKinnon vs. Daniel Kim set for Journey Fights Series VII on September 8th

Trevor Smandych’s Journey Fight Series returns on September 8th with its seventh installment. Journey Fight Series VII will take place in Calgary, Canada and will feature the 160lb tournament opening round bout between Sean McKinnon and Daniel Kim. The bout was originally scheduled for Journey Fight Series VI, but was postponed due to Kim not having all of his medical work complete. The winner will then meet Preston Baptiste in October.

Also on the card Nate Smandych will be looking to get back on the winning track after dropping a hard fought split decision to Sheldon Gaines at Journey Fight Series VI when he takes on Sean Kearney.

Jessica Gladstone will round out the portion on the pro card, but is currently waiting for her opponent to be announced.

Nate Smandych vs. Sheldon Gaines to headline Journey Fight Series VI on June 9th

The Journey Fight Series 160lb tournament is set to begin on June 9th in Calgary, Canada at Journey Fight Series VI. Set for the main event that night is about between Nate Smandych and Sheldon Gaines. Smandych will be looking to follow up his one sided decision victory over Luis David Cruz Hernandez with an impressive showing, while Gaines will be looking to bounce back from his close decision loss to Scotty Leffler.

Also taking place at Journey Fight Series VI will be the opening round of the 160lb tournament. Seven of the fighters that have verbally agreed to participate in the tournament have officially signed their contracts. They are Troy Sheridan, Ken Tran, Sean McKinnon, Nate Chambers, Marcus Fisher, Preston Baptiste and Pascal Jean-Michael. Daniel Kim is the only fighter that has not signed his contract to compete in the tournament.
