On Sunday, August 14th, Saenchai Sinbimuaythai and Kevin Ross went toe to toe for five rounds at Stand Up Promotions “M1 Grand Muay Thai Championship”. On the line was the MTAA world title as well as the first ever WBC Muay Thai diamond belt. The cheers of the crowd rocked the place, as the fighters did each other, making for an over-the-top fan experience. American fan favorite Kevin Ross came up short in his bid to try and defeat arguably the worlds best pound for pound fighter.

Despite Ross coming up short, he proved to fans of Muay Thai everywhere that he belongs in the ring with the best. Saenchai — he showed why he is considered the best fighter in the world. It was a treat for Muay Thai fans everywhere and a great step in helping American fighter’s get the respect they deserve. Due to the magnitude of this fight, Muay Thai Authority has decided to release the pictures of Saenchai vs. Kevin Ross before any other photographs from the event. Saenchai is a slick fighter and if you put it down on paper he should have Ross beat in every aspect, except maybe heart. There is no questioning Saenchai’s heart when it comes to fighting, but Ross’ is as big as they come. He keeps moving forward and to make him quit you have to turn his lights out. Ross is going to show he is a game opponent and likely press the action because the word boring and Kevin Ross don’t belong in the same sentence. Ross will likely be able to steal a few rounds early on, but Saenchai will begin to take over in the later rounds. If anyone can pull of the upset it is Kevin Ross, however, at the end of the day Saenchai will walk away with a decision victory. We must note that Ross does have all the tools to win and if he does it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that he was the one to pull off such a huge upset.

Result:
Saenchai by Unanimous Decision

Coke Chunhawat vs. Tetsuya Yamato
Chunhawat and Yamato should put on a good fight. Yamato has some good hands and solid kicks, but Chunhawat has the overall package. The fight might start off slow in the first round, but as it continues expect the pace to pick up. Chunhawat can hurt you with pretty much anything in his arsenal and as tough as Yamato is he might not have enough to stand in front and trade with Chunhawat when this turns into a fire fight. Expect Chunhawat to keep the fight close early on, but once the third round comes around he will turn it up and finish Yamato.

Result:
Coke Chunhawat by (T)KO in the third round

Rungravee Sasiprapa vs. Kunitaka Fujiwara
Fujiwara will be a game opponent for Rungravee to start the fight, but as the fight goes on Fujiwara will wear down. Rungravee will implement some of his powerful leg kicks to chop Fujiwara down. Once the effects of the leg kicks being to settle in it won’t be long before Fujiwara is barely able to stand. Not only does Fujiwara have to worry about Rungravee’s powerful leg kicks, but the fact that Rungravee is an aggressive fighter won’t help. Rungravee will be trying to exploit any opening that presents itself so that he can end the fight. Expect this one to end midway through as the leg kicks being to add up and Rungravee scores a (T)KO victory in his American debut.

Result:
Rungravee Sasiprapa by (TKO) in the third round.

Malaipet Sasiprapa vs. Chike Lindsay
It is safe to say that Malaipet is no longer the feared fighter he once was. There was a time when he name alone could put fear in his opponent, but as of late he has not seemed very motivated in the ring. Now he is set to face Chike Lindsay as he tries to defend his WBC Muay Thai international title. Coming off a draw in a kickboxing bout that took place on July 30th, Malaipet could use an impressive showing to throw some life back into his career. Lindsay seems to be the perfect opponent to do that against. Despite having not fought in Muay Thai since late 2009 Lindsay is a dangerous fighter, but the time off of Muay Thai competition could have an effect on him. There likely won’t be any ring rust because he did have few MMA fights in that time span, but it is not the same as fighting pure Muay Thai.

Lindsay is strong in the clinch and uses elbows well when he locks you up, but Malaipet is not someone you want to engage in a clinch war with. If anything the key for Lindsay lies in his cardio as Malaipet has shown a lack of it in his pervious fights. If Lindsay can keep Malaipet moving and working he can look to capitalize in the later rounds. Despite the cardio issue Malaipet will likely pull ahead in the firs three rounds and Lindsay won’t be able to do enough in the last two to steal the fight from him. Expect Malaipet to pull out a much needed win by decision.

Result:
Malaipet by Unanimous Decision

Daniel Kim vs. Carlos Ramirez
This fight has changed significantly from when it was announced. Originally Artem Sharoshkin and Shane Oblonsky were supposed to fight until Sharoshkin had to withdraw from the bout. Daniel Kim replaced Sharoshkin and then a few weeks ago Oblonsky had to withdraw and Carlos Ramirez came in as a last second replacement. Kim fights out of Fairtex in Northern California and Ramirez fights out of Team Oyama in Irvine, CA. Ramirez posses the power in his hands to end this fight at any moment and his cardio is very solid, while Kim seems more likely to us his technique to score points and take this to a decision to pull out the win. It isn’t an easy fight to pick, but we are going with Ramirez to finish the fight some time after the third round. Don’t be surprised to see Kim ahead on the scorecards before Ramirez is able to catch him and finish the fight.

Result:
Carlos Ramirez by (T)KO in the fourth round

Muay Thai Authority was able to catch up with Saenchai as he arrived in Los Angeles, CA for his upcoming fight with Kevin Ross thanks to the help of David Huerta and Robin Hart. Saenchai answered a few questions regarding his upcoming fight with Ross as well as his future plans and how he stays motivated after having already accomplished so much in Muay Thai. Saenchai vs. Ross takes place on Sunday August 14th at Stand Up Promtoions “M1 Grand Muay Thai Championship”.

MTA: Last year you expressed interest in fighting Kevin Ross and the fight is now happening on August 14th. What is the reason you would like to fight Kevin Ross?

Saenchai: In my mind Kevin has really improved his Muay Thai technique. I want to fight him because he is the best fighter in America.

MTA: How familiar are you with Kevin’s style of fighting, is there anything that you feel he does that could present any problems for you in the fight?

Saenchai: I am not afraid of Kevin Ross, but I am not underestimating Kevin Ross.

MTA: You are considered the best Muay Thai fighter in the world by many. How do you stay motivated when fighting when you have already achieved so much?

Saenchai: I look at my experience and find my weakness. I then work toward making my weakness stronger and that is what keeps me motivated. I want to strive to be more and more. Don’t think about what you have already think about improving.

MTA: It was announced that you would be fighting Kevin Ross for the WBC Muay Thai Diamond Belt. What are your thoughts on this?

Saenchai: It is exciting and I am very confident.

MTA: Does your training change at all depending on your opponent? Example if you are fighting a Thai do you train harder than if you are fighting an American?

Saenchai: It is the same for everyone.

MTA: Your last fight in the U.S. you defeated Tetsuya Yamato by knockout due to a head kick. What can they expect in the fight with Kevin?

Saenchai: I am going to be looking for my opportunity and will take whatever is open for me to take.

MTA: As far as your fighting career goes what are your future goals, and is there anyone in particular you would like to fight?

Saenchai: I want to keep fighting for now and once I retire I want to have my own camp in Thailand. I will fight anyone who is not over 65 kg (143 lbs) doesn’t matter who.

Ever since antiquity man has understood the power of diamonds, often referring to them as the “unbreakable” mineral. These gemstones, along with their lustrous appearance, have the reputation of being the hardest and toughest of all jewels. Because of this, there’s no question concerning man’s allure to this magnificent piece of earth. With that, what better fight than Saenchai Sinbimuaythai versus Kevin Ross for the WBC to award its first ever Diamond Belt in its Muaythai division? Does

Saenchai, known as one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world, not bring with him to the ring the very same qualities as one of the most yearned for jewels on earth? Furthermore with this level of opposition, will Ross not be performing under the same pressures that are known for making diamonds? It seems to me this belt is fitting for a clash between these two combatants, each having paved the way for the sport in their own respective ways.

Nonetheless, if you asked Kevin Ross ten years ago if he ever thought he’d see the day when he’d be standing in the same telling square as Saenchai, he’d probably tell you never in this lifetime. However, this is because ten years ago Ross was involved in another kind of fight; a fight for his sobriety. Even though the desire to be a part of Muaythai had been there since Ross was 16 years old it wasn’t until 1999, after the tragic passing of his good friend Moe, that he started taking the dream more seriously.

Although, this wasn’t until after spending his early twenties dueling with his demons from the inside of a bottle. Because of his friend’s death, Ross had been drinking more than ever and soon felt the crushing weight of depression resting on his shoulders.

Despite this, all the while Ross knew in the back of his mind there had been unfinished business between him and his friend. Moe had been the only person in whom Ross confided in about his dreams of becoming a fighter. With this, day after day, year after year, the thought had burdened Ross, until one day he realized that he had been wasting his life away, and that if his friend Moe were there to see it, he’d probably let Ross know. I guess most men in this position will eventually have an epiphany, although not all will answer. However, Ross did, and on that day he looked down at his bottle of alcohol and emptied out the contents and all the perils that came with it. Within twenty-four hours he was in the gym and never looked back.

Ross, whose in-the-ring inspirations include Ramon Dekkers and Wangchanoi to name a few, feels he was born to be a fighter, and coming from a place of turmoil, sets out in each fight to show the world that lives can be turned around and dreams can be lived. Whether it’s a tough loss like we’ve seen against Sittisak, or a triumphant win like we’ve witnessed in the Malaipet fight, Ross brings that in-your-face, hard hitting style to every contest. Never getting too caught up in titles, he would rather go down in history as someone who entered the ring to fight, not just for the strap, but rather because it’s a calling that Ross feels he was put on this planet to do. It’s the fear of having to look back on a life only half lived that has Ross not only chasing his dreams, but fighting for them.

All the same, on August 14th, Kevin Ross will have the chance to live out his aspirations once again, proving the pressures of life can either make or break a man – or in this case, create diamonds. However, these diamonds are more than glimmering stones on a green strap; what they represent is the prismatic light that both fighters shed on a sport which is often left in the dark, at least in America. For if Ross manages to dethrone the king of the cartwheel kick, not only does he bring home a belt of gems, but along with it comes the recognition that his legacy as a fighter, like diamonds, will last forever.
