Omar Ahmed is currently in Thailand fighting and training. He recently won his first fight since recently arriving in Thailand and was kind enough to take some time to talk to Muay Thai Authority about his experience over there. Omar has been going to train and fight in Thailand for the last few years but plan on staying for an extended duration this time.

MTA: You are back in Thailand Omar, how is everything going over there?

Omar: Everything is going real well. This is my 4th year in a row coming to Thailand and training at 13 coins.

MTA: What made you chose 13 coins?

Omar: I chose this camp because Saenchai trained here and he’s my favorite fighter. I train with Kru Sorn who has been Saenchai’s trainer for a while.

MTA: Any idea how long you will stay?

Omar: I’m going to stay for several months and I haven’t decided when I want to leave yet.

MTA: You just fought and won. Aside from the obvious joy of victory how was the fight?

Omar: The fight was awesome I felt I had one of my best performances and I feel like I have improved tremendously from my last fight.

MTA: This fight was at a higher weight than normal right, around 154, why the jump up in weight and how did you feel?

Omar: I fought a guy who was 154 because that was the only opponent they had for me. I weighed in at 148 for the fight. I felt really strong and I felt better than I did fighting at 140. I was eating healthy and wasn’t eating small portions of food to make weight. I trained 2 times a day, ran 5 miles 2 times a day, hit pads two times a day. I Worked on my clinching a lot this time around and I trained hard but I wasn’t struggling through it.

MTA: When do you think you will fight next?

Omar: As soon as I left the ring the promoter (One Songchai) called up my manager and told him he was impressed with my performance and he has fights for me in Lumpini and Raja.

MTA: How often are you planning on fighting out there?

Omar: I hope I can fight every 3 weeks while I’m here and get as much done as possible.

MTA: What’s the main difference you see from training and living in Thailand as opposed to being back home in the states?

Omar: It’s completely different here in Thailand as far as the training and living. I love my lifestyle here. I eat amazing food every day, nice weather, very nice people, I’m training with the best in the world, people are respectful, and no one is envious. When my camp took me to get matched up I asked them who am I fighting? How many fights does he have? Where is he from? What’s his name? They looked at me and said “don’t worry you just go and fight and prove yourself on the Kings Cup”…a real fighter fights whoever and I wasn’t scared. I’m always prepared for the worst and I can accept any outcome of a fight. I was confident just because they picked me to fight on that night and I said to myself these people believe in me and I believe in myself as well. I went in there and didn’t care what he knew or how good he was, and just executed what I do and won the fight.

MTA: Do you have any words for your supporters?

Omar: I want to thank all my supporters. I love all of them. I will continue to make them proud in the future and I want to thank the people who stuck by my side for the past 12 years. I’m far from done and I’m grateful for this blessing that I have to be healthy and to be able to do what i love for this long and still be young.

Kevin Ross was a major part of the big year that was 2011 for Muay Thai. He fought two of the world’s best fighters and helped continue to push Muay Thai in America. We took some times to catch up with Kevin about the year that was 2011 as well as what he has planned for 2012.

Kevin gives his thoughts on Saenchai and Sakkedao as well as addresses the recent news that full rules Muay Thai will now be allowed in New York. He also talks about potentially fighting Omar Ahmed who has recently expressed interest in fighting Kevin, as well as possibly heading back to Thailand.

MTA: Kevin this was a big year for Muay Thai in America, looking back at the year what are your thoughts?

Kevin: All in all I am extremely happy with the progress America has made as a whole in moving Muay Thai forward. There have been a good amount of quality shows here and they keep getting better. Some top fighters from the U.S. have competed with some of the best in the world and have shown that we can hang with them and deserve to be here. It’s only going to get bigger and better from here.

MTA: You fought two of the best fighters in the world in Saenchai and Sakkedao; they themselves have fought 5 times with Sakkedao winning 3, including the last two. Who do you think is better?

Kevin: They are two completely different fighters so it is hard to say which one is better. Saenchai has proven year after year why he is one of the greatest of all time but Sakkedao keeps getting better every time and really showed it in his last performance against Saenchai. Saenchai’s a ninja but Sakkedao is just a hard ass straight forward fighter who sticks to the basics and wears people down, nothing fancy. I love watching both those guys and am honored to have shared the ring with them. I hope to one day rematch them, maybe not back to back this time hahahaha.

MTA: Do you currently have anything planned for 2012?

Kevin: As of right now nothing is set but I would love to get a fight on the next Friday Night Fights card in New York especially seeing how it is the first ever one with full rules, which is huge. I know that Omar Ahmed has expressed interest in fighting me recently and in the past; I think this would be a perfect opportunity for this fight to happen. I’ve been wanting to go back and fight on the east coast for a long time now, it just hasn’t worked out. I know that Take On has a show coming up as well, but seeing how Omar has close ties with them (Take On) I think that this show (Friday Night Fights Muay Thai) would be more of neutral ground.

Other than that Lion Fight is doing a show February 25 at the Hard Rock in Vegas that I would love to be on. If I could get on both of those that would be ideal, but if not I will either be heading back to Thailand or possibly going to Australia, where I have been wanting to fight forever. No matter what happens I just hope I can stay very active in 2012 and just get bigger and better fights every time and continue to help push the standards here in America. I would also really love to get an opportunity to fight in Japan. As always I’m going in there every time to put on exciting fights and give it everything that I have, win lose or draw.

MTA: When someone says they feel they need to fight you how do take that?

Kevin: I always have mixed feeling about it, when someone says they respect me and just want to fight me to test themselves then I take it as a compliment but at the same time I’ve had people say they want to fight me and run their mouths yet when the opportunity presents itself they find every excuse in the book not to do it. If you’re gonna open your mouth you had better be able to back it up.

MTA: You are recognized as the “poster boy” for American Muay Thai and Omar is pretty recognized in New York. How familiar are you with Omar?

Kevin: Not really familiar with him at all up until I seen his interview, he mentioned that he’s beaten the same people as me although I saw his fight with Justin which he clearly lost and he beat Terrance, but we fought way back when I was an amateur like 7 years ago. Maybe he was referring to DeLuca, don’t really matter seen a few of his fights, he’s got a flashy kicking style like Taekwondo or kickboxing, not real traditional.

MTA: So if Omar were to accept to fight you on the first full rules Muay Thai event on January 20th then you would do it without hesitation?

Kevin: Yea I’ll fight anyone I don’t care, but I’m more then happy to give people what they ask for.

MTA: Now you said you don’t want to fight Omar on Take-On because of his close affiliation with them. As a fighter do you think that can affect things or does it make you uneasy going into the fight?

Kevin: You always gotta worry about getting unfair decisions in someone else’s home town (country), that’s just part of the game, but already having it be his home town I think adding the fact that one of Take On guys is related to him is just too much to ignore. Not to say that they would judge unfairly, but I think fighting on neutral ground leaves a lot less room for arguments.

MTA: So with full rules now in New York it definitely makes it more appealing for you to go and fight over there?

Kevin: Yea, I mean I’m always willing to fight any rules, I know not all fighters will, but I will always prefer full MT no matter what

MTA: Thanks Kevin. We hope to see you back in action sooner than later.

Kevin: Yea man!

New York’s Omar Ahmed is currently training in Thailand. He has an upcoming fight at Lumpinee Stadium this Saturday night against Ramon Kaewsamrit and was kind enough to take some time from his training to talk to Muay Thai Authority about the upcoming fight and his future plans. Omar will be moving up a weight class for the upcoming fight, after spending his entire career in the super lightweight division his next fight is in the welterweight division.

MTA: You are fighting Ramon Kaewsamrit on Saturday night at Lumpinee Stadium. How has your training in Thailand been going?

Omar: My training has been going really well I been training hard for this fight everyday.

MTA: What camp are you training at while out in Thailand?

Omar: I’m training in 13 coins (that’s the only camp I train at when I come to Thailand).

MTA: You are fighting at a higher weight than usual, 147 to be exact. Why?

Omar: Yea I decided to move up in weight class because I have gotten taller and I’m growing as I get a little bit older. Although I can still make 140 I decided to see how I can do at 147 because it’s a whole other division of fighters I can take on and I believe I did well through out the years at 140 so I want a bigger challenge for myself.

MTA: How do you feel your skills have improved since arriving in Thailand?

Omar: I feel my skills always improve when I come to Thailand because I train with fighters at a much higher level than back in the states including lots of sparring with Saenchai when he’s in town. I learn a lot of techniques from him and from some others as well and I’ve built a pretty good friendship with him and the trainers and people here over the past 3 years.

MTA: How long do you plan on staying?

Omar: I was planning on staying till mid January, but I have some really good fight offers and opportunities here that not anyone I believe can get from the states because of the friendships I have built with some good connections out here. For example I have done a TV commercial here and I have been offered to do some more as well as some movies.

MTA: Anyone you would like to face when you do decide to return to the United States?

Omar: I feel I’ve fought everyone I need to fight in the U.S and the only guy I feel I need to fight is Kevin Ross. I respect him as a fighter and I feel he’s beat all of the guys I have beat and the only guy he hasn’t fought yet that’s a good contender in the U.S. is me. I would want to do it in New York because I think it’s good for the Muay Thai scene out there and the fans. They dont get big fights to watch there and there are many big fights on the west coast or in Lumpinee Stadium in Thailand.

MTA: Any words for all your supporters back home?

Omar: For my supporters back home, I really hope I make you guys proud by representing the U.S. and New York over seas and I hope to never let those who support me down because honestly having supporters means a lot to me no matter how many of them it is, its always a great feeling to know people are proud of you. I plan on taking it to the top of this game one day and I hope they can support me along the way. Thailand is an awesome country and I love it here very much… after this next fight I will make some big decisions on what to do as far as staying and taking those opportunities.

There were two notable Muay Thai events this weekend in North America. To make things easier for our readers when there are multiple event on a weekend we like to give them the Weekend Rundown on Mondays. The two events this weekend were Stand Up Promotions “Oblonsky vs. Krause” which took place at Commerce Casino in Commerce, CA on July 9th and Take-On Productions “Battle at the Beacon Theater” which took place in at the Beacon Theater in New York, NY on July 8th. Below is a quick break down of each event as well as the results.

Stand Up Promotions “Oblonsky vs. Krause”
Stand Up Promotions had a sell out crowd of 1,200 in attendance on Saturday night at Commerce Casino in Commerce CA. The main event featured the return of Bryce Krause after a year and a half long layoff. Facing Krause in his return to the ring was MTAA national champion Shane Oblonsky who was looking to make his first title defense. From start to finish the action did not stop as Krause and Oblonsky fought tooth and nail to try and pull ahead. Krause pulled out early when he connected with a left hook that floored Oblonsky, but in the third round Oblonsky looked to make a comeback. He connected with some flush shots that seemed to have Krause in trouble but was not able to capitalize. Krause then seized control of the fight in the final rounds as he out muscled Oblonsky in the clinch. The judges awarded Krause a decision victory making him the new MTAA national champion.

Also on the card, Jose Palacios used well timed counter attacks to take a decision win over Artem Sharoshkin, while Sheldon Gaines used a methodical and technical approach in his victory over Borzoo Honargohar.

Pro Results:
Bryce Krause def. Shane Oblonsky via Unanimous Decision – MTAA Super Welterweight Title Fight
Jose Palacios def. Artem Sharoshkin via Unanimous Decision
Sheldon Gaines def. Borzoo Honargohar via Unanimous Decision

Amateur Results:
Niko Ruiz def. Bounthong Syvanthong via Unanimous Decision – MTAA Amateur Title Fight
Alfred Kashakyan def. Anthony Cardoza via (T)KO at 0:22 of Rd. 2
Marcos Guevarra def. Roy Corona via KO at 1:21 of Rd. 2
Gabriel Ibarra def. Andy Sityodtong via KO at 0:42 of Rd. 1
Carlos Otiniano def. Howard Jeon via Split Decision
Yoli Cervantes def. Jessika Lopez via (T)KO at 1:14 of Rd. 3
Alex Gonzales def. Daniel McDonald via Split Decision
Manny Martinez def. Miguel Galindo via Unanimous Decision

Take-On Productions “Battle at the Beacon Theater”
Take-On Productions “Battle at the Beacon Theater” which was heavily marketed as the largest Muay Thai event in New York City history was a success for the promotion as they set a promotional best in attendance with roughly 1,700 people at the event. The current New York Muay Thai attendance record stands at over 2,500 people which was set by Friday Night Fights “Romulo vs. Hinds” event on May 14, 2010. The milestone night for the promotions included some exciting fights including a tilt between New York’s Omar Ahmed and Holland’s Nisvet Sivac. Ahmed was able to pick Sivac apart throughout the entire fight and had him hurt in the third round, but was not able to finish him before the bouts end. All of the judges scored the bout for Ahmed who took home a unanimous decision victory.

Another notable fight on the card was the rubber match between Eddie Martinez and Turan Hasanov. Despite the bad blood between these two fighter nothing was settled in the ring as the fight was declared a draw. Martinez effectively worked his leg kicks the entire fight, but Hasanov almost ended the fight when he knocked down Martinez in the second round. After an 8 count Martinez make sure to clinch with Hasanov so that he could not capitalize on his knockdown. This likely leaves the door open for the fighters to meet yet again.

The night’s other two professional bouts featured Sean Hinds taking a decision over Douglas Edwards and Andy Singh was successful in his professional debut by defeating Eric Ruiz via decision.

Pro Results:
Andy Singh def. Eric Ruiz via Majority Decision
Omar Ahmed def. Nisvet Sivac via Unanimous Decision
Eddie Martinez and Turan Hasanov fight a Majority Draw
Sean Hinds def. Douglas Edwards via Unanimous Decision

Amateur Results:
Nick Vaughn def. Gaius Ebratt via Unanimous Decision – WKA Title Fight
Elijah Clarke def. Andrew Ballenger via Unanimous Decision
Chris Mauceri def. Andre Laureano via Unanimous Decision
Jay Matias def. Brandon Mickens via TKO in Rd. 3 – WKA Title Fight

In the night’s main event Andy Singh and Eric Ruiz were both making their professional debuts. Singh tried to keep the fight fast paced while Ruiz looked to keep a slower pace and pick his shots. The fast paced Singh looked to connect with his signature jumping knee throughout the fight. Ruiz stalked Singh connecting with heavy shots while Singh fired back with combinations landing punches in bunches which would be the deciding factor in the fight. The judges awarded Singh a majority decision.

Omar Ahmed and Holland’s Nisvet Sivac immediately went to work as their fight started with both fighters exchanging punches. Ahmed was able to sweep Sivac several times and work his knees from the clinch. Sivac’s nose began to bleed in the first round and continued to do so through out the entire fight. The second round saw both fighters attack to the body relentlessly and by the end of the round they were both showing signs of fatigue. In the third round Ahmed connected with a right hook that wobbled Sivac, refusing to go down Sivac was able to recover and make it to the end of the fight. The judges awarded Ahmed a unanimous decision victory over a very tough Nisvet Sivac.

Turan Hasanov and Eddie Martinez met in a rubber match after having split a pair of fights as amateurs. There was a brief exchange between the two fighters at the weigh-ins and the fight was set to serve as the mediator for the bad blood between them.

The fight started with both fighters immediately meeting in the clinch, after breaking Martinez kept Hasanov at bay with teeps and leg kicks. The fighters then met in the clinch again and while Martinez used his knees to score Hasanov worked well with his hands. Hasanov’s legs showed the effect of the leg kicks by the time the second round started. Hasanov began to wait for Martinez to throw kicks before attacking with flurries. Hasanov connected with a hook in the second round that dropped Martinez and the referee gave him a standing 8 count, Martinez then made sure to clinch to avoid letting Hasanov capitalize after the knockdown. The third round began with Martinez attacking with leg kicks while Hasanov attacked with punches. They exchanged kick for punch until Hasanov decided to go for a flying knee that missed. After going kick for kick they clinched and Martinez clearly took the upper hand in the clinch to end the fight. The judges did not help settle the feud between the two as the fight was scored a Majority Draw. Two judges scored the fight a draw while one judge scored the fight for Martinez.

In the night’s first pro bout Douglas Edwards met Sean Hinds in a re-match hoping to avenge his previous loss to the seasoned veteran. The taller Edwards tried to keep Hinds pressed against the ropes, but Hinds was able to fight off the ropes using some solid clinch work and counter attacks. Both fighters connected with combinations and leg kicks, and in the third round Hinds seemed to have Edwards hurt after connecting with a hook to the body. The fight ended with both fighters trading punches and headed to the score cards. Hinds once again pulled out the win this time by unanimous decision.

Take-On Productions “Battle at the Beacon Theater” is set for July 8th in New York, however, some of the fights have been affected by injuries. Omar Ahmed and Rami Ibrahim both had the fighters they were going to be fighting pull out of their respective fights due to injury. While Ibrahim is still awaiting an opponent, Ahmed is now scheduled to face Nisvet Sivac of the Netherlands.

Sivac trains out of Haarlem Gym and brings a record of 17-3 to the fight. Sivac last competed in a K-1 rules fight in the Netherlands in which he dropped a decision to Redouane Boukerch. The fight will definitely be a test for Ahmed who holds professional record of 4-3. The
Sitan Gym fighter from New York will be seeing his first action of 2011.

Ibrahim meanwhile was set to face Thanit Whattanaya who was forced to withdraw with a shoulder injury. The bout was set to take place for Ibrahim’s 132lb WKA title but currently no replacement for Whattanaya has been found.

MTA: You have an upcoming fight with Jake Mainini how has your training for the fight been going?

Omar: My training is going good. I train hard for every fight.

MTA: You were originally scheduled to fight Jake Mainini but he recently had to withdraw from the fight. Does a change in opponent a few weeks before hand affect your training at all?

Omar: No not at all because I am a well rounded fighter and I don’t stop my training when that happens. I train with all different types of fighters and I have fought all different types of styles in the ring. I just want to enjoy the luxury of fighting in the ring and put on a entertaining bout

MTA: Can you give us a prediction for the fight?

Omar: I believe I will win this fight. I never like to say what I think I’m going to do to my opponents because anything can happen in a fight but I’m always very confident

MTA: This is the first action you are going to see this year. Is there any particular reason for not having any fights the first half of the year?

Omar: The reason why I haven’t fought this year so far is because I usually go to Thailand for winter time over here to train and fight, and I come back when the weather starts to get a little warmer. The main reason is because I was offered to be the head Muay Thai coach of a MMA gym in Manhattan New York called “New York Jiu Jitsu” and they have been taking care of me very well and I have been giving a lot of my time helping them out. I also teach at Sitan gym as well. So I decided to give back a little and help fighters get into the ring. 2010 was a very busy/big year for me in the ring.

MTA: You have stated before that you are going to take a few more fights and then likely relocate to Thailand or Holland is that still the plan?

Omar: I will definitely fight in Holland and in Thailand because I have many opportunities waiting for me there.

MTA: If you are still going is there anyone in particular you would like to fight here in the states before you go?

Omar: I was supposed to fight Kevin Ross June 25th but the date of the event got changed to July 8th and he wasn’t able to do that date because its to close to the fight he has with Saenchai. I will fight again in the next Take-On event for sure in September I don’t know against who yet but I’m open to fight anyone from North America.

MTA: What are your plans for the second half of the year, do you have any other fights scheduled?

Omar: I have July 8th scheduled, and I will try to get on as many shows I can the rest of the year, I don’t pick my opponents so I don’t know who I will be fighting though.

Take-On Productions July 8th event “Battle at the Beacon Theater” is shaping up with some high quality pro fights. Ibrahim recently lost an exciting and close decision to Matt Embree as part of the Journey Fight Series 140lb tournament, while Watthanaya will be in action this weekend as he takes on Romie Adanza at WCK Muay Thai’s “Road to WCK”.

If you walk into Sitan Gym in Queens, NY odds are you will find Omar Ahmed training, or coaching. The Queens, NY native is on a mission to become the best Muay Thai practitioner he can be. Like anyone looking to strive for greatness you need discipline and dedication, and Omar has let Muay Thai engulf his life.

“Muay Thai is basically my life in a lot of ways because I am a pro fighter and I do teaching and coaching as well when I’m not in the ring as my job.” said Omar. “Muay Thai brings me peace, happiness, and lots of fun…and I get paid to do it so its a blessing.”

Omar first began his training at the age of twelve, and since then has flourished under the tutelage of Aziz Nabih. Sitan Gym has been his home since he began training at the age of twelve. It is hard training, and as Omar put it “straight business”. The grueling training sessions, the suffering that goes on when preparing to compete is all done with one purpose. Building a champion.

“We take this sport very serious and I work really hard with him (Aziz).” said Omar. ” It’s straight business when it comes to training (he makes me suffer from hard work but it paid off).”

The time for Omar to venture out is approaching, Sitan is his home, but with the level of Muay Thai in the United States not in exactly the best condition, he wants to test his skills world wide. Although no stranger to travelling and fighting abroad this upcoming move would seem to be more permanent. Omar has visited and fought in Thailand before. When in Thailand he trained at 13 coins along side the legendary fighter Saenchai. While there he also competed at world renowned Lumpini Stadium. The experience is something Omar states was one of the best he has had in his Muay Thai career, but at the same time it was also one of the hardest. Omar embraced the opportunity that came to him though and was able to put on one of his best performances.

“I was asked if I would want to fight in Lumpini against a Thai on TV there and I was very honored to have that opportunity. Having Saenchai tell me I’m a good fighter and getting lots of attention from the Thais gave me a lot of confidence for it. It was the best experience of my life.” said Omar. “What was going through my mind was that this is a opportunity that most foreign fighters don’t get and I just got it offered to me so I took it with out thinking twice and had one of my best performances there. I got a lot of respect from the Thais after that fight and I was very relaxed and my mind was very clear and focused.”

Looking to fight the best Omar plans on travelling abroad once again, either to Holland or Thailand. This time based on the fight opportunities he receives he will be relocating for short periods of time. His goal is simple for his career, and that is to fight the best and climb up the ladder as far as he can while he can. Omar plans on having about three more fights in the United States before setting off to fight abroad. He isn’t looking to call any names out.

“I really don’t want to fight anyone in a sense that I don’t like them or nothing… I just want entertaining bouts to be part of and I always have put on great shows all over the world.” said Omar.

Omar’s agenda is simple. Fight the best talent he can, put on entertaining bouts, and be the best fighter he can be. What more can you ask for from a fighter?
