Inciting a near riot after his first lightweight title defense, Khabib Nurmagomedov proved it’s not all business for him. Following his submission victory over Conor McGregor, “The Eagle” took flight into the crowd at UFC 229…
In one of the most talked about post-fight moments in MMA history, lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov nearly incited a riot at UFC 229. Highly charged emotions and a tense atmosphere gave way to absolute carnage at the pay-per-view event.
October 6 was the UFC’s marquee event of 2018. Hailed as the ‘biggest UFC fight of all-time,’ Khabib vs. McGregor at UFC 229 evolved into an ugly situation. After forcing the tap from McGregor in round four, Khabib and his teammates went off the rails.
Targetting McGregor’s teammate Dillon Danis, “The Eagle” flew into the crowd and exchanged strikes with the BJJ specialist. Meanwhile, Khabib’s teammates exchanged punches with McGregor inside the octagon.
Needless to say, the MMA world was thrown into turmoil.
Khabib Responds To UFC 229 Controversy
Khabib Nurmagomedov had already apologized, kinda, in the UFC 229 post-fight press conference. Although he appeared to have regretted his actions, the time since has seen “The Eagle” also justify them in some respects.
As first reported by MMA Fighting, Khabib says you can’t keep an eagle in the cage:
“I prayed to God for one thing, to be left alone in the cage with this clown,” Nurmagomedov said, courtesy of RT. “I asked him this every day, I prayed that we would have no injuries, that we would make weight, and regain our strength, and finally be locked in that cage.”
“Because a lot was said outside that cage, and I said that once that octagon door is shut, I am not responsible for my actions.”
“The first thing I wanted to show him, is the difference between our people, and his people,” said Nurmagomedov. “We know our history, our ancestors, and what our people have been through. Nothing can break us.
“And with what happened afterwards, some people say I did the wrong thing, others that I did the right thing. You can’t confine an eagle to a cage. And I showed them that.”

UFC 229 As A Whole
Unfortunately, not many will remember UFC 229 for anything other than the main event and madness that followed it. It was indeed the marquee card of the year for the UFC, with some absolutely brilliant moments.
Tony Ferguson vs. Anthony Pettis, for example, was an incredible fight. Ask anyone about UFC 229 right now and they will instantly discuss the chaos that ensued after the fact. The question is, will this mirror the infamous UFC 223 bus attack.
Remember Dana White declared McGregor’s actions as ‘disgusting,’ yet that very attack was used to promote the eventual Khabib-McGregor fight at UFC 229.
