Following the madness of UFC 229, a lot of talk has focused on Khabib Nurmagomedovv and Conor McGregor. With top contenders Tony Ferguson and Dustin Poirier in the wings, it’s time for the picture to expand…
Albeit a much anticipating and eventually exciting event, UFC 229 had more ramifications than any of us had imagined. Having only just been stabilized after a period of turmoil, the 155-pound division was again thrown into uncertainty.
Following the brawl that spilled out of the octagon lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and his rival Conor McGregor were suspended until the December hearing. An absent current lightweight champ, suspended with the former absent lightweight champ.
Just like that, the two biggest stars in MMA were sidelined. Former interim champion Tony Ferguson was arguably the rightful contender to Khabib at UFC 229. Many were also discussing Dustin Poirier in the title mix after his fifth straight undefeated bout.
Now it appears a McGregor vs Poirier rematch and a very long awaited Khabib vs. Ferguson clash is proposed.
McGregor vs Poirier Rematch
Among other things, UFC president Dana White told MMAJunkie.com that he plans a four-man tourney for the lightweight title. Khabib would fight Ferguson, and McGregor would rematch Poirier in this proposed battle:
“The fight that makes sense right now is probably Poirier,” White said when asked of McGregor’s next move. “And then Tony (Ferguson) gets a shot at the title, and the two winners fight each other. But I’m not sure exactly on a date when Conor’s going to fight yet. We have to get through this Nevada State Athletic Commission stuff first.”
White was then asked about how long he thought McGregor and Khabib would be suspended:
“For me to even say anything is going to happen – who knows what these guys are going to get for suspensions? If it was just a fine that would be one thing,” he said. “They’re definitely getting suspended. I can’t see a scenario where they don’t get suspended. So I can’t do anything.”

“Do I look concerned? I’m not concerned,” White said. “I’ve got a job to do. I’ve got to make fights, no matter who’s here and who’s not. I have to make fights, so I will continue to make fights until we find out what the suspensions are, and then when the suspensions are laid down, I will continue to make fights until they are back.”
“I can’t see them giving Khabib over one year,” White said of the NSAC. “If it’s over one year, c’mon, man. That would not be fair. The whole thing was over in 40 seconds. Nobody got touched. Nobody got hurt. Nothing happened. So I think that the commission has to send a message, and I hope it’s not over a year. I don’t think it would be fair.”
McGregor’s knockout victory over Dustin Poirier is one of just four losses in Poirier’s 8-year UFC stint. That was at featherweight, and “Diamond” has only lost once in 10 fights at 155 pounds.
