Everyone knows Sage Northcutt, one of the nicest guys in the fighting business but still kicked ass. Well, earlier today Dana White was speaking on the UFC Unfiltered Podcast with Jim Norton and Matt Serra. Where he announced that ‘Super’ Sage Northcutt had been released by the UFC.

Within the UFC there has been a lot of talks recently about fighters being cut, with the Flyweight division reportedly being scrapped and not all of the fighters getting the opportunity to move up to Bantamweight. Now some of the higher divisions fighters are being dropped, not the ones that aren’t performing either.

UFC unfiltered features former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra and Jim Norton, so there is a wealth of UFC knowledge and they had Dana on and they were talking about Sage.

“We Let Sage Go”

Sage didn’t have a bad resume during his time with the UFC, we saw what happened to Jon Jones after rising to fame at such a young age. But Sage didn’t reach the heights White was hoping in his time with the UFC. Here is what Dana said. (quotes courtesy of bjpenn.com)

“We let Sage go”

“Sage is young and Sage needs some work. Let him get some work in some other organizations and we will see where this kid ends up in a couple of years. Maybe we will pick him back up again. His contract was up so we let him go.”

Well, it doesn’t seem as much of cold-hearted cut as the Flyweight division is seeming to be. He was an exciting prospect who maybe was picked up a little too early in his career. Maybe he just couldn’t hack the spotlight right now and he will come back as Dana suggested.

Sage attended a ‘ONE Championship’ event the other week and admitted it would “be cool” to sign there. Are ‘ONE’ making more steals from the UFC? Demetrious Johnson was taken from us, then more recently Eddie Alvarez. Could Sage be headed there too?
