MMA journalist Gareth A. Davies was recently on Off The Ball and revealed some interesting information about Conor McGregor.
According to Davies McGregor will be back in the cage soon enough, but it seems his appearances will be limited. Davies who has talked to people close to McGregor thinks we will only see McGregor fight three more times before he retires. For a while, people thought he would not see McGregor return to fighting after making 100 million from his Boxing fight with Floyd Mayweather.
Davies talked with McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh while in Italy for Bellator’s opening event and it seems McGregor will definitely return to fighting to collect a few more paydays. If you aren’t aware, The Notorious One likes to spend money on his lavish lifestyle, the man has luxury cars, the finest clothes, jewelry and that all adds up. He hasn’t fought in nearly a year and he hasn’t set foot in the UFC’s octagon in nearly 18 months.
Making sure those checks keep coming in will motivate anyone and it seems that right now Conor is motivated.
Money is the ultimate motivator.
“John said to me that [Conor]’s in SBG every single day that he’s in Dublin. He is training very hard and he hasn’t given up the ghost. He has got to come back. The way he spends money – that money is going to run out at some point. And the way that Tony McGregor is putting fuel in that speedboat all over Ireland – they are going to need more money.”
It seems that when he does come back he will be fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov first. The rumors of this fight have been circulating for quite some time. McGregor is getting ready to go through court proceedings for attacking a UFC bus and breaking a window that injured fighters on the bus earlier this year. He was charged with three counts of assault, and one count of criminal mischief.
According to Davies once that is settled things will move fast for McGregor and he thinks that the recent appearance of both McGregor and Nurmagomedov at the World Cup in Russia is foreshadowing what is to come.
McGregor vs. Khabib is very likely.
“Two things: the fact that Vladimir Putin invited them both to be in the final at that stadium is a potential precursor to an event happening there. Wouldn’t it be amazing if they both fought each other there, in an open-air stadium, next year?”
That is a fight that everyone is expecting to happen, but if he is only fighting three more times who would his other two fights be?
The most obvious fight would be his rubber match with Nate Diaz. McGregor and Diaz draw the fans in and they have each won one fight. If McGregor is really looking for big paydays then this one will bring in some big money. The way these two talk smack will promote this fight and it would probably crush UFC PPV records.
As for the third fight, it is really up in the air. If Conor were to lose to Nurmagomedov then he might try to get a rematch with him. Another option would be a super fight with Georges St.Pierre. This rumor has also been circulating. If he is looking for big fights then St.Pierre is probably as big as they come next to the fight with Nate Diaz. It would also give McGregor a chance to cement his legacy.
Who really knows what McGregor will do next. He has proven that he is extremely unpredictable so let’s just hope he comes back and fights again for our entertainment.
