UFC Fight Night 96 took place at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon. The night’s main event featured a catchweight bout between John Dodson and John Lineker. Originally scheduled to be a bantamweight bout, Lineker missed weight.
The fight between the two was close. Dodosn used a very technical approach as he made sure to stay away from Lineker’s power. Lineker was able to get into a few exciting exchanges with Dodson and despite seeming to have him hurt on two occasions Dodson didn’t go down. It was an exciting fight from start to finish and when the judges rendered their verdict it was Lineker who walked away with a split decision win. With the win he has now won six straight.
In the night’s co-main event Alex Oliveira scored an upset over former Bellator champ Will Brooks. Oliveira failed to make the lightweight limit coming in five pounds over. In the first round it seemed that Brooks may have injured his rib and that set the tone for the fight as it was evident that something was wrong. Despite the injury Brooks kept fighting, but eventually Oliveira’s onslaught was too much and in the third round as he delivered heavy shots from Brook’s half guard the fight was stopped.
Oliveira jumped up and taunted Brooks after the stoppage which then prompted Brooks to immediately get up and throw his mouth piece at Oliveira. The two were separated before things escalated.
