Glory 22 France Fight Card

Glory 22 is set to go down in less than 2 weeks time in Lille, France. The main event will feature Glory Heavyweight Champion Rico Verhoeven defending his title against the formidable Benjamin Adegbuyi. Also featured in the night’s event is the Glory Lightweight Contender Tournament, which includes Davit Kiria, Sittichai Sitsongpeenong, Josh Jauncey, and Niclas Larsen. The winner of the tournament will face Glory Lightweight Champion Robin Van Roosmalen.

The Glory Superfight Series, a staple of every Glory event, will include the likes of Morad Bouzidi, Filip Verlinden, and North America’s own Shane Oblonsky.

Glory 22 also marks the first international event to to air live on SpikeTV at 4pm ET. Previously, events overseas were shown in the US after a lengthy delay.

Shane Oblonsky talks upcoming WLF 8-Man Tournament

The WLF has announced the WLF Championship 8-Man Tournament set for January 31, 2015 in China. The winner will become the WLF World Chmpion and take home €12,000.

We caught up with Shane Oblonsky to talk about the upcoming tournament:

MTA: It was recently announced you’ll be participating in the WLF’s 8-man tournament. Can you tell us a little bit about this?

Shane: This will be the second same-night tournament that I’ve competed in, the first being Glory 17’s 4-man featherweight tournament. An 8-man tournament poses a little bit of a different challenge, but I’m definitely up for it. I’ve fought in China a couple of times before and am excited to go back for this.

MTA: You’ll be facing up to 3 of 7 possible opponents. Are you familiar with any of them and how do you prepare for this?

Shane: In an 8-man tournament you have the possibility of fighting 3 times
in one night. Your preparations and strategy have to take that into
consideration — that, together with having no idea who any of the other fighters are make for a lot to prepare for. I’ve been training at both All-In MMA in Buena Park and Team Oyama in Irvine, which gives me a good variety of sparring partners. Training with fighters who have different strengths, reaches, heights, etc. will definitely help prep me for the random selection of the tournament. Training for each of 7 fighters would be difficult anyway.

MTA: How does your experience in the Glory 17 tournament affect the way you prepare for this?

Shane: I learned a lot from that tournament. I realized I used a lot of
energy going for it in a little bit of a brawler way. The weight cut also got
to me, something I’ve definitely adjusted for this 8-man tournament.
Cutting weight will definitely go better this time. I look to bring a game that’s diverse, which I think will help in the approach to any of these fighters.

MTA: Does fighting in another country ever have you worried that the only way to win is by KO, as decisions might be stolen from you?

Shane: This will be my third time fighting in China. I’ve been asked before if
going to a decision in a foreign country is something to worry about,
but so far the outcomes I’ve experienced in China have been pretty
fair. That said, of course you always look for the KO, the most
decisive result.

MTA: You’ve fought in both Muay Thai and kickboxing — do you have a preference?

Shane: Kickboxing and Muay Thai are different. I tend to like kickboxing more,
because it’s faster paced and there’s more action. It really just depends
on your opponent. If he’s game, then it doesn’t matter. The fight will be good for the fans.

Lion Fight 14 Results and Recap

Lion Fight 14 took place last night in Las Vegas, NV. The night’s main event featured a bout between France’s Gregory Choplin and Suriname’s Marco Pique. Choplin was able to out point Pique to take home a unanimous decision victory. With the win, Choplin has now won three consecutive fights while Pique has a three fight win streak snapped with the loss.

In the night’s co-main event Jorina Baars and Cris “Cyborg” Justino met in a five round affair that demonstrated how technique can outweigh strength and aggression. Justino came out with her trademark aggression, but Baars was more than happy to sit back and counter her attacks. Baars officially knocked down Justino in the first round with a head kick and in the fifth round with a spinning heel kick, although referee Tony Weeks missed at least two other occasions throughout the fight where a knockdown should have been issued. Justino hit the canvas from a teep in one occasion and from a knee on another, both times they were ruled slips by the referee. When it was all over it was clear that Baars had done everything needed to win the fight and the judges agreed as they awarded her a unanimous decision.

Shane Oblonsky shocked the Muay Thai world by defeating Malaipet Sasiprapa by unanimous decision. The consensus coming into the fight was that Malaipet would defeat Oblonsky, but that was not how things played out. Oblonsky pushed the pace through the fight backing up Malaipet and continuously firing punches, kicks and anything he could get off to keep the action going in his favor. It was a tremendous performance by Oblonsky, especially after not having fought in over a year.

In other action Victor Saravia made his professional debut with an upset victory over Anthony Castrejon. Saravia showcased his power after knocking down Castrejon on multiple occasions and stopping him in the third round. Gaston Bolanos also made a successful pro debut with a fourth round (T)KO over Brian Del Rosario.

Lion Fight 14 Fight Card Update

Lion Fight Promotions is set for its next event, Lion Fight 14 takes place a the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas on March 28th. The event features Gregory Choplin vs. Marco Pique as its main event. Choplin is a Lion Fight veteran, making his 5th appearance with the promotion. Pique makes his debut for the organization, hoping to add a 4th win to his recent 3-fight win streak.

Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino returns to Lion Fight to face Jorina Baars (25-0-3 in Muay Thai). Baars, no stranger to Muay Thai and wins over reputable opponents, should stand to be a formidable challenge to Cyborg’s dominance in the ring.

Jose Palacios replaces Shane Oblonsky against Gabriel Varga at Glory 11

Jose Palacios will get his chance on the Glory stage at Glory 11. The Northern California based fighter will step in and replace an injured Shane Oblonsky against Canada’s Gabriel Varga at Glory 11 in Chicago on Saturday, October 12.

Palacios is coming off a controversial loss to Scotty Leffler at Lion Fight 11 and a win against a prospect like Varga would be a huge boost for him. Varga last competed at Glory 8 in Japan and had a good showing at the tournament. He won his opening round fight against Abdellah Ezbiri and then lost by decision to eventual tournament winner Yuta Kubo

3 more fights confirmed for Glory 11 including Danyo Ilunga vs. Michael Duut and Gabriel Varga vs. Shane Oblonsky

Glory has confirmed three more fights for Glory 11. The event which takes place on October 12th in Chicago, IL has added Danyo Ilunga vs. Michael Duut, Gabriel Varga vs. Shane Oblonsky, and Steve Moxon vs. Reece McAllister.

Ilunga and Duut will be returning to action since the Glory 9 light heavyweight tournament, both men lost to eventual champion Tyrone Spong in the tournament. In the tournament opening round Duut knocked Spong down in the opening seconds of their fight before being knocked out by Spong 30 seconds into the fight. Ilunga made it to the finals and lost due to a controversial referee stoppage 16 seconds into the fight.

Varga last competed at Glory 8 in Japan and had a good showing at the tournament. He won his opening round fight against Abdellah Ezbiri and then lost by decision to eventual tournament winner Yuta Kubo. Oblonsky will be looking to get back in action as he has not competed since a decision win over Jose Palacios in early 2012.

Artem Sharoshkin replaces Shane Oblonsky at WCK: Matter of Pride on Nov. 11 in Las Vegas

Artem Sharoshkin (@ArtemSharoshkin) will step in to replace an injured Shane Oblonsky (@ShaneOblonsky) against Tie Yinghua at the November 11 WCK: Matter of Pride event. The event which takes place at The Plaza Hotel and Casino is the WCK’s annual WuLinFeng show and will feature several WCK vs. WuLinFeng bouts.

Sharoshkin steps into the ring after a 4-man tournament victory in August, where he defeated Joe Davidson and Chris Culley (@UrbanLegend145) in one night. The young Russian born fighter will look to bring his high energy to the fight card as he joins training partner Luis Bio (@LuisBio1) as part of team WCK.

Updated North American Super Welterweight Rankings 10/18/2012

Baxter Humby drops out of the
rankings due to inactivity. Chike Lindsay moves up to number one after his win
over Malaipet in June and Luis Bio’s loss to Michael Mananquil, Bio drops to
number two. Shane Oblonsky passes Bryce Krause and gets into the three
spot after Krause’s loss to Justin Greskiewicz. Rounding out the rankings is
new addition Joe Sampieri.

1. Chike Lindsay (16-4)
Lindsay most recently defeated Malaipet
Sasiprapa at Bangkok Fight Night in
Atlanta,
GA this past June. The pair had
met in August 2011 a fight with Lindsay had also won. Lindsay was then forced
to withdraw from a bout in September due to injury and currently his next fight
is unknown.

2. Luis Bio (11-4) (@LuisBio1)
Luis Bio dropped his fight to Michael Mananquil
after the bout was stopped in the third round due to a cut. It was a close back
and forth fight up until that point. Before his loss to Mananquil, Bio had won
his last two bouts due to cut stoppages because of elbows against some of
Mexico’s top
fighters (Brian Hernandez and Erik Mejia). Bio will be back in action on
November 11^th at the WCK WuLinFeng show against Zhou Zhipeng.

3. Shane Oblonsky (7-3)
Oblonsky was last in action at Lion Fight
Promotions “Battle in the Desert 5” on February
25th in Las Vegas.
Oblonsky rebounded from a decision loss in China in January by earning a
unanimous decision win over Jose Palacios. Oblonsky is a talented fighter and
when focused can give you his opposition fits in the ring. He is now training
with Colin Oyama which will undoubtedly help Oblonsky reach the next level. His
next bout is scheduled for the November 11
^th WCK WuLinFeng event
against Tie Yinghua.

4. Bryce Krause (9-4-1)
Krause returned to action after another year
long layoff to be part of the K-1 Max tournament. He faced Justin Greskiewicz
in the opening round and early on it looked as if Krause might be on his way to
victory, but Greskiewicz turned the tables and defeated Krause by (T)KO.
Currently Krause next bout is unknown, but hopefully fans don’t have to wait
another year to see him fight.

5. Joe Sampieri (8-2) (@JoeSampieri)
Joe Sampieri most recently defeated Mike Erosa
at the August Friday Night Fights Muay Thai event by decision. It had been
almost a year since Sampieri had a fought, his previous fight being a decision
over Harris Norwood in September of 2011. Sampieri’s next bout is currently unknown.

Rankings
qualification – Muay Thai and Kickboxing bouts are all taken into
consideration for the rankings. These rankings are not only based on
Muay Thai Fights as many fighters compete in both full rules Muay Thai
and Kickboxing bouts. Fighters are not to be inactive for any period
longer than 12 months or they
will be dropped from the rankings unless a fight is schedule within a
month
from the date they become ineligible. Fighter’s that compete in two
weight
classes will be assigned a weight class that they compete in regularly
or hold
a major title in.

WCK Muay Thai: Matter Pride set for November 11th in Las Vegas

WCK Muay Thai will be returning to Las Vegas on November 11^th to the Plaza
Hotel and Casino with “Matter of Pride”. Their annual WuLinFeng event will feature a WBC Muay Thai
world title fight between Jemyma Betrian and Tiana Caverly as well as Team WCK
vs. Team WuLinFeng.

Fighting for team WCK are notable fighters such as Luis Bio (@LuisBio1),
Mike Lemaire (@MikeLemaire), Shane Oblonsky (@ShaneOblonsky), Rung Reung Chai and Leyna Ovchynnikova.

For those not familiar with
WuLinFeng, there are no elbows allowed, limited knees in the clinch and the
fights are only three rounds.

Updated North American Super Welterweight Rankings 6/5/2012

A few changes in the super welterweight rankings, no one dropped out but there has been some shuffling. The most active of the fighters have been Luis Bio of Mexico and Chike Lindsay. Bio has won his last three fights all by (T)KO, while Lindsay has gone 1-2 in his last three outings after taking a step up in competition. Bio jumps up to one in the rankings making the move from previously being ranked fourth.

1. Luis Bio (11-3)
The WBC Muay Thai National Mexican Champion returned to action in late 2011 after recovering from some nagging injuries and since then he has reeled off three consecutive victories, all by (T)KO. Now he is scheduled to take on Michael Mananquil at the WCK Muay Thai event on July 7th in Oxnard. Bio has been able to use his size in the ring well and has proven to be a butcher with his elbows. In his last two fights, both against some of Mexico’s top fighters (Brian Hernandez and Erik Mejia) Bio earned the stoppage due to cuts. He is currently the only 154 lb fighter on a multiple fight win streak.

2. Baxter Humby (39-8)
Humby scored an impressive KO over Domenik Zidov in September with a spinning heel kick to the liver. Since the KO of Zidov, the “One Armed Bandit” has not fought. A scheduled bout in Mexico this past December fell though and after not having a fight since September it seems he is once again he is expected to fight in Mexico again, although not much information is known.

3. Chike Lindsay (15-4)
Lindsay started 2012 on a rough note when was KO’d by Wang Wei in China. He then rebounded nicely by scoring a vicious KO over Eddie Martinez in Atlanta, afterwards he came up short in a decision against Suriya Prasathinphimai in Thailand. Now Malaipet is set for a re-match with Malaipet Sasiprapa on June 15th, Lindsay originally defeated Malaipet in August of 2011 via unanimous decision.

4. Bryce Krause (9-3-1)
Krause returned to action in 2011 after being out for over a year. He scored a decision win over Shane Oblonsky, but has not competed since the July victory. Krause has been unable to find a fight since victory over Oblonsky. If Krause can stay healthy he can make a run in the 154lb division, his KO power and hard nosed style makes him a dangerous opponent for anyone.

5. Shane Oblonsky (7-3)
Oblonsky was last in action at Lion Fight Promotions “Battle in the Desert 5” on February 25th in Las Vegas. Oblonsky rebounded from a decision loss in China in January by earning a unanimous decision win over Jose Palacios. Oblonsky is a talented fighter and when focused can give you his opposition fits in the ring. He is now training with Colin Oyama which will undoubtedly help Oblonsky reach the next level.
