Lion Fight 11 Results and Recap: Yamato and Ross put on a show in co-main event, Cris Cyborg dominates

Lion Fight 11 took place tonight at the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas, NV. The night’s main event featured Cosmo Alexandre vs. Nampon PKMuaythai in what was a slow methodical fight. Alexandre returned to Muay Thai action after two years away from the ring to focus on MMA and he was clearly the stronger of the two fighters, but seemed content to score just enough to steal each round. Nampon didn’t offer much in way offense and when he did Cosmo answered with kicks or punches. It was a technical performance by Cosmo, but probably not one the fans will be talking about. He apologized in his post fight interview for his performance.

The night’s co-main event between Kevin Ross and Tetsuya Yamato stole the show. Yamato came out looking sharp in the first round landing some big right hands that seemed to have Ross hurt. At the end of the first round he blitzed Ross and cornered him landing several elbows that seemed to have Ross in serious trouble. Some cuts on the nose of Ross were opened up as well as one behind his head, Ross turned things around in the second round and pushed the pace mixing up his punching and kicks well.

Ross started the third round strong but Yamato started to come on late in the round. In the fourth and fifth round Yamato went to work with more elbows opening up more cuts on Ross, this time over his eye. Ross was a bloody mess but continued to push forward showing nothing but heart. Yamato accurately countered and in the fifth round seemed to have Ross in some more trouble. It went to the judges and the damage Yamato caused with his elbows nullified the aggression that Ross fought with as two of the three judges awarded the fight to Yamato. This was an excellent fight as Yamato and Ross made sure the fans got their money’s worth.

MMA powerhouse Cris “Cyborg” Justino was moonlighting in Muay Thai and she had no problem dealing with Jennifer Colomb. From the opening bell until the referee stopped the fight in the third round this fight was all Justino. In the third round some heavy body shots finally put Colomb down and the referee jumped in and stopped the fight. Credit to Colomb for taking the fight on short notice, but Justino was too strong and aggressive.

In a fight that was another mismatch Malaipet Sasiprapa defeated Caio
Urugai in less than one round. As soon as the fight started a crisp
right hook from Malaipet knocked Urugai down and he was in complete
survival mode after that. Two more knock downs followed the last due to a
right hand that hurt Urugai which Malaipet followed up with an elbow.
The referee started the count but Urugai’s corner threw in the
towel giving Malaipet his fourth consecutive win.

Angela Hill and Monique Travis both made their pro debut on the night and both put on a solid performance. The difference in the fight was Hill’s work in the clinch; she clearly had the advantage when they clinched. Both were pretty even when not fighting in the clinch, but when they locked up the taller Hill used her leverage well to control the clinch and deliver knees and elbows. Hill was awarded a unanimous decision and starts her pro career with a win.

Scotty Leffler and Jose Palacios met in a re-match that went the distance after their first fight lasted only 25 seconds. It seemed Palacios was on his way to win a decision due to some crisp counter striking and move to 2-0 against Leffler, but to the surprise of many Leffler was awarded the unanimous decision. Before the fight Leffler had announced he would retire after this bout and for now he rides of into the sunset with a victory.

In the nights first pro bout Josh Shepard defeated Jonathon Wyderko by majority decision. With the win Shepard improves to 2-0 as a pro.

Lion Fight 11 complete with 8 pro bouts

Lion Fight has officially announced their entire fight card for Lion Fight 11. As previously announced the event will be headlined by Cosmo Alexandre vs Nampon PK Muaythai. The night’s other confirmed bouts were the co-main event of Kevin Ross vs. Tetsuya Yamato and Cris “Cyborg” Justino vs.Martina Jindrova.

Five more bouts have now been made official they are Malaipet Sasiprapa vs. Caio Uruguai, Scotty Leffler vs. Jose Palacios, Angela Hill vs. Monique Travis, Josh Shepard vs. Jonathon Wyderko, and Nick Chasteen vs. Niko Ruiz. Hill, Travis, Wyderko, Chasteen, and Ruiz will all be making their pro debuts at the event.

Lion Fight 11 will take place in front of The D at the Fremont Experience in Las Vegas on September 20th and air live on AXS TV.

Jose Palacios vs. Scotty Leffler expected to take place at Lion Fight 11

Lion Fight has already announced their main event bout between Cosmo Alexandre and Nampon and their co-main event bout between Kevin Ross and Tetsuya Yamato for Lion Fight 11. No other fights have been confirmed for the September 20th event but sources close to the promotion have informed Muay Thai Authority that Jose Palacios and Scotty Leffler will meet in a re-match of their 2011 fight.

The pair previously met at Lion Fight Promotions “Battle in the Desert 2” in May of 2011 in a fight that lasted just 25 seconds. Palacios connected with a huge right hand that knocked Leffler down and broke his jaw. Now two and a half years later Leffler will be looking to avenge the loss.

Lion Fight 11 will take place September 20th at the Fremont Experience in Las Vegas and air live on AXS TV.

Results and Recap: K-1 Los Angeles MAX Tourney fights

Justin Greskiewicz and Bryce Krause kicked off the K-1 Max Tournament. Krause came out strong and looked to be ready to take this fight over after a strong first round. His hands looked great and he seemed more accurate and aggressive than Greskiewicz. In the second round, however, the tables turned. As Krause had Greskiewicz in the corner he was countered by a right that hurt him and then a flurry of strikes from Greskiewicz followed. A right sent Krause down, after answering the referee’s count another right by Greskiewicz dropped Krause again, but he is able to make it out of the round. Krause comes out looking aggressive once again to start the third round. A right by Greskiewicz a minute into the round hurt Krause, Greskiewicz followed up with more punches, a knee and then more punches until Krause took a knee and the referee stopped the fight.

Joey Pagliuso was a man on a mission in the second bout of the Max Tourney. Pagliuso came out looking end his fight with Ben Yelle as he was throwing heavy strikes. Heavy right hands were landing by Pagliuso in the opening frame and as it ended a flying knee by Pagliuso knocked Yelle down. Yelle made into the second round and Pagliuso continued his assault scoring two knocking down after connecting with some heavy right hands. Despite the damage Yelle pushed through and made it out of the round, but it wasn’t long before the end. 18 second into the third round a right hand by Pagliuso stunned Yelle and as Pagliuso followed up with strikes the referee jumped in to stop the fight.

Scotty Leffler and Michael Mananquil put on an exciting fight for fans. From the opening bell until the final bell it was back and forth with both fighters throwing everything in their arsenal. Punches, kicks and knees were all flying and both fighters were taking and dishing it out. In the end the judges awarded Michael Mananquil the unanimous decision victory. Very exciting fight from start to finish that easily could have gone to either fighter.

Kit Cope and Chaz Mulkey rounded out the Max Tourney. There was plenty of bad blood coming into this fight between the two fighters. The opening frame was rather close as Mulkey looks to stalk Cope who in return had no problem counter fighting. In the second round Cope attempted a spinning kick which Mulkey easily side stepped. Cope got up limping and Mulkey smelled the blood and immediately went in for the attack. He knocked Cope down who answered the referee’s count, but then another chop to Cope’s leg knocked him down for a second time. After answering the referee’s count he tried to attack Mulkey but it wasn’t long before Mulkey used another leg kick to send him down again. With the K-1 three knockdown rule in effect the fight was stopped. Mulkey then lost his cool and tried to go after Cope. The referee and ring officials held him back and cooler heads prevailed.

Updated North American Welterweight Rankings 7/26/2012

Michael Mananquil holds his spot at number one after his win over Luis Bio, and Chris Kwiatkowski jumps into the number two spot. While former number two Jose Palacios drops out of the rankings following back to back losses. Entering the rankings at number three is Malaipet Sasiprapa after seemingly turning things around following the worst five fight skid of his career and going 2-1 in his last three fights.

1. Michael Mananquil (22-4)
Mananquil returned after a year long layoff to take on Mexican WBC Champion Luis Bio this past July. Mananquil moved up a weight class for the fight with Bio and took home a (T)KO victory after he opened a cut on Bio with an elbow. Its seems Mananquil stay up at 154lbs for at least one more event as he has been announced to be competing in the K-1 Max tournament in Los Angeles, CA on September 8^th.

2. Chris Kwiatkowski (8-2-1)
Kwiatkowski competed earlier this year in Thailand winning by KO over Pit Noi Ratchapatjombun. After returning from Thailand Kwiatkowski has surgery on his shoulder and was out of action for a few months. He returned to the ring on July 22^nd where he defeated Daniel Rodriguez via (T)KO due to leg kicks in the second round. Kwiatkowski’s is yet to be determined, but “The Polish Punisher” deserves to be locking horns with some of the bigger names state side in the 147lb division.

3. Malaipet Sasiprapa (139-27-5)
Malaipet seemed to be back in top form after ending what is easily one of the worst skids of his career in which he went 1-5. Malaipet ended 2011 with a big win over soaring Jose Palacios and followed it up with a decision with over Justin Greskiewicz this past May. “The Diamond”, however, dropped a decision to Chike Lindsay in June. Malaipet’s next fight is currently up in the air and if it wasn’t for the skid Malaipet went through from 2010 to mid 2011 he would easily be ranked higher.

4. Artem Sharoshkin (2-1-1)
Sharoshkin and Scotty Leffler entertained the crowd for five rounds in May and when it was over it seemed Sharoshkin might be walking away with a decision victory, but the judges ended up ruling the fight a draw. Now Sharoshkin looks to get back on the winning track at the August 18^th WCK Muay Thai event in Southern California. Shaorshkin will be competing in a 4-man one night tournament with the winner representing North America at this years WKN Big 8 Belarus tournament.

5. Scotty Leffler (5-2-1)
After returning to action from a broken jaw this past February, Leffler was able to outpoint Sheldon Gaines to earn a decision win. He returned to action two months later in May to take on Artem Sharoshkin. After being dropped in the first round by Sharoshkin Leffler was able to rally enough to convince the judges to score the bout a draw. Leffler has since signed to compete at the K-1 Max tournament on September 8^th in Los Angeles. The tournament will be contested at 154lbs.

Rankings qualification – Fighters are not to be inactive for any period longer than 12 months or they will be dropped from the rankings unless a fight is schedule within a month from the date they become ineligible. Fighter’s that compete in two weight classes will be assigned a weight class that they compete in regularly or hold a major title in.

Scotty Leffler talks upcoming bout with Artem Sharoshkin at Lion Fight Muay Thai VI

Scotty Leffler will be fighting Artem Sharoshkin at Lion Fight Muay VI. The bout is expected to be one of the night’s most exciting fights as both fighters are usually involved in exciting fights. Leffler took some time from his training to answer a few questions for Muay Thai Authority about the upcoming fight with Artem as well as his desire to be involved in exciting fights.

MTA: You have an upcoming fight with Artem Sharoshkin, how is training going?

Scotty: Training is going great! 100% injury free so far!

MTA: How familiar are you with Artem as a fighter and do you feel you hold any advantages over him in your skill set?

Scotty: I know Artem well as a fighter. We have fought on the same card a couple times. I have seen him in action a lot. I do feel like I have an advantage in my skill set. I would say I’m meaner but, that’s not skill now is it? Lol.

MTA: You had a war last time when you fought Sheldon Gaines, is that type of fight you like to be involved in?

Scotty: I love the back and fourth battles! I love to watch them and I love to be in them! I am expecting an all out WAR!

MTA: Do you expect this to be just as exciting as your last fight?

Scotty: I don’t think Artem would allow it any other way. My jaw is fine. It’s like it never happened.

MTA: Your last fight you returned from a broken jaw, how is it holding up?

Scotty: My jaw is fine. It’s like it never happened.

MTA: Any words for your supporters Scotty?

Scotty: I would like to say a special THANK YOU to the people that come to see me fight. I also want to thank Master Nick, Master Lookchang, Norm “The Devil” Turner and all of my training partners. I gotta give my wife a lot of credit as well. I couldn’t do it without her help.

Kevin Ross, Matt Embree, Romie Adanza and more expected to be in action at Lion Fight Promotions “Battle in the Desert 6”

As previously reported on Muay Thai Authority, Joe Schilling and Simon Marcus are expected to re-match in the night’s main event at Lion Fight Promotions “Battle in the Desert 6” on May 12th in Las Vegas. The event which will take place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is also expected to feature Kevin Ross vs. Matt Embree, Romie Adanza vs. Tomonori Sato, Artem Sharoshkin vs. Scotty Leffler and although he has no opponent yet, Malaipet is expected to fight at the event as well.

Ross has not competed since losing to Lumpinee Stadium champion Sakkedao Petchpayathai in October of 2010. He was scheduled to fight Choke Eminent Air in Thailand this month, but a knee injury forced him out of the fight. Embree recently defeated Coke Chunhawat at Lion Fight Promotions “Battle in the Desert 5” and was also the recent winner of the Journey Fight Series 140lb tournament. Fans have been wanting to see this match-up for quite some time and it should prove to be an exciting fight.

Romie Adanza and Tomonori Sato will meet in a re-match. Their last fight took place in Japan this past February, a bout which Adanza won by doctor stoppage after he opened up a cut on Sato. The fight will be for the WBC Muay Thai international flyweight title.

Artem Sharoshkin will be fighting for the first time in 2012 when he takes on Scotty Leffler. Sharoshkin last fought in June of 2011, dropping a decision to Jose Palacios. Leffler returned to action at Lion Fight Promotions “Battle in the Desert 5” after recovering from a broken jaw. He defeated Sheldon Gaines in one of the night’s most exciting fights.
