We had the change to talk to Lion Fight promoter Scott Kent about 2014 and what the promotion has coming up in 2015. Lion Fight continued its strong growth in the United States, and has bigger plans for 2015. They have started to focus on developing America’s young talents and as always continue to bring some of the world’s best striker into the Lion Fight ring. You can read the interview with Scott Kent below.

MTA: Another year is in the books for Lion Fight. How would you sum up 2014 for the promotion?

Scott Kent: 2014 has been another great year for Lion Fight. AXS TV has given us tremendous national exposure and as a result our shows at Foxwoods have been a huge success and Muay Thai is definitely exploding across the U.S. This is also the first year the UFC has asked another professional promotion to be a part of the International Fight Week and Lion Fight was thrilled with the opportunity on the biggest stage in combat sport to showcase Lion Fight Muay Thai.

MTA: When Lion Fight started there was a decent amount of promotions promoting Muay Thai in the United States. Since then many have disappeared. What is it that you have done different that has kept you going strong?

Scott Kent: We’ve seen many promotions come and go since we started 4 years ago. I’m sure there are different reasons for each promotion but this is a very tough business and one of the keys to our success is having consistent shows and building a brand. That takes operating capital and reasonable expectations from a business standpoint. We’ve been fortunate to have that support and commitment and like any business you have show growth and a vision beyond 1 or 2 fights.

MTA: 2015 is coming and you already announced the year will start off with Lion Fight 20 on the east coast. Why start the year off on the east coast?

Scott Kent: We have to work around available dates for the venues and AXS TV, our television partner. The response on the East Coast to Lion Fight has been amazing and we felt this is how we will start the year with Jorina Baars, the new “Baddest Woman on the Planet” defending her title after beating Chris Cyborg in an epic fight in Las Vegas. Foxwoods is the biggest casino in North America and has been a tremendous partner on the East Coast and we will continue to showcase the best Muay Thai fighters in the world and grow our brand and fan base.

MTA: Jorina Baars will be defending her Lion Fight title, is she someone that Lion Fight fans will be seeing more of come 2015?

Scott Kent: We have signed a multi fight deal with Jorina Baars and she will be fighting exclusively for Lion Fight. You rarely fight a Muay Thai fighter with as many fights as she has and still have an undefeated record. She literally can’t get fights overseas and she is an amazing talent and we are thrilled to have her fight for us. No one outside of a very small group of Muay Thai fans gave her much of a chance against Chris Cyborg but she really showed her Muay Thai technique and that she wasn’t going to be intimidated. That is another rematch that is on our radar at some point.

MTA: You also have Chris Mauceri in action, definitely a young up and coming prospect. He is taking on Thai veteran Sittisak, what are your thoughts on that match up; Sittisak definitely has a lot more experience?

Scott Kent: Chris Mauceri wants to fight the best fighters out there. He reminds me of a young Kevin Ross in that respect. He just beat Coke Chunhawat who has vastly more experience and was a former Thai champion on Lion Fight 19. Sittisak fought Kevin Ross on Lion Fight 1 and beat Kevin in a very close fight in which Kevin sustained significant cuts but kept bringing the fight and solidified his reputation as the blood and guts warrior of Muay Thai. Chris Mauceri and Sittisak is another example from our matchmaker, Christine Toldedo that we don’t mismatch fighters to build their records. Christine puts the best fights together for the fighters and the fans and thats another reason Lion Fight Muay Thai has grown so fast.

MTA: Is there any one in particular you would like to bring to the Lion Fight ring in 2015?

Scott Kent: There are many fighters we are looking at for 2015. We have always tried to bring in the best fighters in the world and Christine is having discussions with many fighters as we fill up our cards for 2015. You can always expect us to bring in a few surprises from Thailand and I’m sure we will be bring in many more exciting fighters from around the globe to the Lion Fight ring. We are also very excited about all of the great Muay Thai fighters that we are developing in the United States and of course Lion Fight World Champion Kevin Ross.

MTA: Lion Fight is also making their move into California in 2015, how excited are you for that? California use to be a hot bed for Muay Thai but in recent years it has had a lack of quality events.

Scott Kent: I’ve always followed the Muay Thai scene in California and wanted to make sure the timing was right and we had the right partner before we brought Lion Fight there. We will be working with Pechanga and are so excited about bringing the Lion Fight brand to the biggest and best casino in California. Pechanga is a beautiful property and their location is perfect for our California fans. Strategically it gives us the best locations on both coasts and with our home in the Fight Capital of the World in Las Vegas we feel Lion Fight and Muay Thai have a very bright future.

Scott Kent, the main man behind Lion Fight was kind enough to answer some questions for Muay Thai Authority recently regarding the top Muay Thai promotion in the United States. Scott answered everything from what match ups interest him in the future to what some of the challenges a promoter faces.

Kent also speaks of the expansion and growth fans can expect from Lion Fight in 2015. It really seems the promotion is set to take some big steps including expanding their event locations.

MTA: There have been some big things for Lion Fight in the past few months. When you initially started Lion Fight did you anticipate to do so well this fast?

Scott: We have gone into uncharted territory with Muay Thai in America but even from very beginning Christine and I thought this was a great opportunity for us to step in and take our amazing sport to the next level. Getting on national TV and getting more people to see it was key.

MTA: You recently started having events in Connecticut at Foxwoods Casino. Why there over any other place on the east coast?

Scott: Business is about building relationships and I have a history with the CEO of Foxwoods Felix Rappaport. I’ve known him for over 20 years and he had seen Lion Fight in Vegas so we knew we had a solid partner that would commit to the growth of Lion Fight on the east coast. Foxwoods is amazing!

MTA: How has the reception for Lion Fight been on the east coast?

Scott: The response has been overwhelming. We sold out our first show and everyone knew who Lion Fight was because of the TV exposure and the reputation of the cards Christine has put together.

MTA: What is your favorite part about being a promoter?

Scott: Being a part of something that is alive and being a part of something that is bigger than me or Lion Fight or any one fighter. The Lion Fight team is passionate about what we are doing and taking pride in giving the sport the recognition it deserves. Seeing a kid wear a Lion Fight shirt always brings a smile and reaffirms what we are doing.

MTA: What is your least favorite part about being a promoter?

Scott: There are so many moving parts that sometimes it’s very frustrating to pull it all together and make the show look seamless. Without Christine we couldn’t do this. Like any start up business raising capital and getting sponsors to buy in to what you are doing is challenge as well.

MTA: Out of all the match ups that Lion Fight has had, which has to be your favorite up to this point?

Scott: I get asked this all of the time and I don’t have one fight. Kevin and Tiffany are always exciting, Yod is a legend. Some of the up and coming fighters are really making a name for themselves with their fights and we have signed them exclusively to Lion Fight.

MTA: If you could make any fight in the future which two fighters would be part of that and why?

Scott: I want to see Kevin fight Saenchai, Yamato and I think he wins those fights. We know they would be highlight reel fights. Any fight with Yodsanklai will be a classic. Truly one of those fighters that people will be talking about for years. There are so many great match ups and we have many weight divisions that we don’t have a champion yet.

MTA: What are the plans for Lion Fight in the future?

Scott: We are looking at some new jurisdictions to expand the Lion Fight brand and continue to grow our fan base. We feel it’s very important to maintain a conservative financial plan and focus on growing our fighters and their fan bases rather than coming in and spending millions of dollars on a sport that doesn’t have the infrastructure yet to sustain it.

MTA: You have clearly increased the amount of events you are doing each year, how many can we expect next year from Lion Fight?

Scott: For 2015 we are looking at 10 fights and some new venues beyond Vegas and Connecticut…… stay tuned.

MTA: You have Lion Fight 18 coming up, how excited are you for Lion Fight’s 18th event with two world title fights on the line?

Scott: It looks like the Baars fight isn’t going to happen now but we have stacked the card and Yod and Khalifa are the story.

MTA: After Lion Fight 18, when can we expect to see Lion Fight 19?

Scott: We will have 2 World Title fights on November 21 at Foxwoods and another stacked card. In addition to the title fights there may even be a Rungravee sighting…

Lion Fight Promotions (@LFPLasVegas) made waves in late 2012 with the announcement that they signed a deal with AXS TV. Their January 25th event “Lion Fight 8” in Las Vegas will air live on AXS TV and feature a main event bout between Yodsanklai Fairtex and Gregory Choplin. Lion Fight Promotions’ President Scott Kent (@ScottLFP) was kind enough to take time from his busy schedule to answer a few questions about Lion Fight Promotions television debut and more.

MTA: Big news recently from Lion Fight that they will now be live on AXS TV. How important was it for Lion Fights growth to get on television?

Scott: Securing a television deal was one of our primary goals when Christine and I first formed Lion Fight Promotions two years ago. We’ve seen our fights grow as more people are exposed to this amazing sport and we feel that our television deal with AXS will allow us to reach a broad national audience through their very successful Friday night fight series as well as expand our sponsorship partners. Our fights have been described as the “best kept secret in Las Vegas”, now we can bring the secret to 38 million homes.

MTA: Since Lion Fight was founded a few promotions have come and gone and not many have been able to put on the caliber of fight card that Lion Fight does. How is it that Lion Fight has been able to continue to grow?

Scott: The fight business isn’t easy and there is a reason many promotions come and go. Financially it’s very difficult and a group starting out had better be prepared to lose money on several fights and consider all of the ancillary costs when you put together a pro forma for a series of fights. Although the events are amazing, Christine and I are working on putting the shows together for ten weeks prior to fights and it’s a lot of work. For us it’s a labor of love and if you don’t have that love and respect for the sport it would be easy to walk away.

MTA: As a promoter do you feel you need a fighter to be the face of your promotion, why or why not?

Scott: I think it’s very risky to rely on one fighter to be the face of your promotion. We have always focused on established and rising American stars as the core of our promotion while we bring in the best international talent. That’s why we have signed Joe Schilling, Kevin Ross and Tiffany Van Soest and are looking at others. With the competitive nature of the “business” of fighting sports there are always competing promoters that try and lure your fighters away. Fortunately for us, our experience is that many of the fighters have learned the hard way that many of groups that have promised the moon have disappeared and we are still here and growing. We want fighters that are committed to Muay Thai and Lion Fight.

MTA: As a Muay Thai promotions how difficult is it to promote in a city (Las Vegas) that right now seems to be infatuated with MMA?

Scott: Actually, I think it works to our advantage because MMA fighters are some of our biggest fans. They all train in Muay Thai and have been very supportive of our fights. By having Jen Wenk, who worked for the UFC for 6 years handle our media relations she has access to all of the MMA media outlets that have also been very supportive of Lion Fight. By being a Las Vegas based company and in the absence of national media for Muay Thai we feel having MMA involved in what we are doing in the Fight Capital of the World makes perfect sense.

MTA: Do you feel Lion Fight is where you expected it to be when the promotion was launched two years ago?

Scott: Christine and I were just reflecting on that a bit. People told me we would never get a TV deal in less that 3-4 years, we did it in 2. That we wouldn’t be able to attract major international fighters, we have. Muay Thai would be a difficult sell to the American public, we have a tremendous fan following that is growing daily and with our deal with AXS we feel Muay Thai will explode in the United States. So we are thrilled about Lion Fight and attention we have garnered. It this has always been about working in a sport we love and that we feel is the most exciting stand up fighting style in the world.

MTA: What do you see as the next step for the evolution of Lion Fight now that you are on TV?

Scott: We want to further brand Lion Fight as the preeminent Muay Thai promotion in the United States and continue to bring our fans the best fights. We also have more surprises for 2013 so follow our website for updates, LionFightPromotions.com.

Muay Thai Authority has confirmed with a source close to the situation that Lion Fight Promotions has reached a multi-event deal with the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The deal will begin with their upcoming November 19th event which will be moving from Buffalo Bill’s Casino in Primm, NV to “the fight capital of the world” Las Vegas, NV.

Although no match-ups have been announced for the event, it will likely feature some of the best talent in the United States as well as the world. Lion Fight Promotions burst on to the scene with “Battle in the Desert” in February of 2011. Since their debut they have hosted three events that have featured top fighters such as Cosmo Alexandre, Gregory Choplin, Ky Hollenbeck, Kevin Ross, Joe Schilling, Remy Bonnel, and Chris Romulo. An official announcement from Lion Fight Promotions on the multi-event deal is expected soon.

It is no secret that Lion Fight Promotions is making waves in the Muay Thai world. They are diligently working hard to help grow the sport of Muay Thai in the United States. Their May 14th card is possibly the most stacked Muay Thai fight card to hit American soil. With their efforts to continue to help Muay Thai grow Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has proclaimed March 20th Lion Fight Promotions Day.

Promoter Scott Kent stated “It was an honor to receive the proclamation declaring Lion Fight Promotions Day from Mayor Goodman who is a Las Vegas icon and someone who is committed to promoting Las Vegas. We want to draw on the tremendous appeal of Las Vegas and make the home of Lion Fight Promotions also the home of Muay Thai in the United States”.

It seems everyone is getting behind Lion Fight Promotions. The consensus seems to be that having a Muay Thai promotion in “The Fight Capital of the World” makes perfect sense. So far with the quality of fight cards they are producing, and the buzz growing around them it is hard to argue against that.

Muay Thai Authority was able to catch up with President and CEO of newly formed Lion Fight Promotions, Scott Kent. It seems Lion Fight Promotions has some big plans for the sport, and Scott Kent is at the forefront. Along with Christine Toledo it seems Mr. Kent has a solid plan to help Muay Thai grow in the United States.

MTA: Starting a Muay Thai promotion might seem like a risk to many people since Muay Thai hasn’t reached the popularity levels of MMA here in the United States, what appealed to you about starting a Muay Thai promotion?

Scott Kent: I think any business in this economy can be risky but we feel we have a sport that has survived for many centuries and grown around the world. We have a conservative business plan that allows us to grow with the sport. MMA has been extremely successful in a bad economy and they deserve all the credit for that but it also tells us there is loyal audience for combat sports. We feel that although Muay Thai is an essential part of any MMA fighter’s arsenal that it’s even more exciting as a stand alone sport. So we aren’t trying to compete with the UFC or Strikeforce or any other MMA promotion. If anything I think the success of MMA will increase the public’s awareness of Muay Thai.

MTA: Will Lion Fight Promotions be working with sanctioning bodies such as the WBC, and WMC or will it work on its own titles?

Scott Kent: At this point we have had discussions with the WMC and WBC and other sanctioning bodies. I have a lot of respect for these organizations and we will do what is in the best interest of our company and the fighters.

MTA: As far as goals for Lion Fight Promotions what is the main focus?

Scott Kent: When I sat down with Christine Toledo and we first started talking about this we realized we wanted to accomplish two things. Bring major international talent and provide a bigger stage for our local and regional fighters. We are in the Fight Capital of the World and we don’t have a Las Vegas based Muay Thai promotional company. It starts at the grassroots levels with the local gyms, the smokers and amateur events and getting them involved. Then give the fighters and fans the opportunity to see some of the best fighters in the world.

MTA: You are already making a splash with your first event bringing in many recognizable and talented fighters. When deciding what fighters would grace your first fight card what when into the decisions?

Scott Kent: When we were looking at the first card we wanted to bring the best fights we could with the budget we had. As a start up company we didn’t have sponsors or a TV deal. Christine and I were able to put together a card that will bring some well known names as well as some fighters from Thailand. We also wanted to showcase the Las Vegas fighters on the pro and amateur card. We are also putting together our May card and we will have some surprises Muay Thai fans will love.

MTA: How do you see future the for Muay Thai here in the United States?

Scott Kent: We are very optimistic about Muay Thai in the United States. Once people see it I think they will love it like all Muay Thai fans do. We just need to expose it and stay committed to it.

MTA: What do you think needs to done to help Muay Thai gain the recognition in the United States that MMA has achieved and no longer be seen as just an aspect of MMA, but a sport all in its own?

Scott Kent: The phenomenon of MMA and the UFC has developed very recently. I was working with Mandalay Resort Group when the UFC did their first show and many people were disappointed with the ground game. Since then they have made changed and adapted to what the fans want to see more of. Muay Thai on the other hand has a centuries old rich tradition that MMA didn’t have and had more success in Asia and Europe. I actually think Muay Thai acceptance would have been more difficult before MMA. It was just a few years ago John McCain compared MMA as human cockfighting and look where it is now. The public’s appetite for all combat sports has exploded. That’s why I feel Muay Thai has such a bright future here. A martial art that is all stand up and utilizes punches, kicks, knees and elbows? It doesn’t get any better than that.

MTA: You have had a successful career as corporate executive in the casino and resort industry, how will this help transcend to establishing a solid and successful Muay Thai promotion?

Scott Kent: I’ve been in the casino/resort business in Las Vegas for over twenty years and have developed amazing contacts in the business community. Las Vegas is my home and I want to use my knowledge of the casino business and utilize the friendships and contacts I have developed over the years in finding the best venues and creating an agreement that benefits the sport and the casino. That’s really the only way we can grow the sport is through these relationships. Michael Starr and Stuart Richey at Buffalo Bills Casino in Primm

MTA: What can you tell fans of Muay Thai to expect for Lion Fight Promotions?

Scott Kent: Christine and I are committed to bringing the best fights we can and we are calling on Muay Thai fans everywhere to come out and support Muay Thai and let’s give this sport the recognition it deserves.

It seems Lion Fight Promotions has some big plans for Muay Thai. Promotions come and go in this sport, but from what Mr. Kent has indicated, Lion Fight Promotions has a solid plan, and it seems they are ready for the long run rather than banking one one show, they already have 4 shows planned for 2011. Hopefully Christine Toledo, and Scott Kent can help take Muay Thai to the mainstream. It sounds like they are headed down the right path, and if you think Kent is just a guy in a suit, here is picture of Mr. Kent after training with Christine and Master Chan. It’s good to see a CEO who is also a practitioner.
