Amateur Fighter Spotlight: Pawel Zawistowski

The Muay Thai and Kickboxing world is filled with amateur fighters. Most of the amateurs won’t turn into a professional fighter for one reason or another, while some will go on to make excellent pro athletes. If they go into the pro ranks or not one fact remains, they play a significant role in shaping the future of Muay Thai and Kickboxing. This week’s Amateur Spotlight segment features Pawel Zawistowski.

Pawel who fights out of Kings Combat Fitness in Queens, NY recently won the Friday Night Fights 8-Man Tournament. We were able to catch up with Pawel and talk about why he started training, winning the tournament and his future goals.

MTA: When and why did you start training Muay Thai?

Pawel: I started Muay Thai about 4 years ago. I always was a fan of combat sports especially stand up fighting, one day a friend of mine convinced me to try it out myself. A little time later I fell in love with Muay Thai and have been practicing ever since.

MTA: What gym do you represent and what is your record?

Pawel: I fight out of Kings Combat Fitness, it is located in Queens, NY. Dave Wai Moy is my Muay Thai coach and Andrew Rivera is my strength and conditioning coach. My record is 24W 4L.

MTA: What is your best memory since you started competing in Muay Thai?

Pawel: I would say the best memories are wining for the first time and also a victory in a title fight. Absolutely amazing feeling even until now.

MTA: When you started training was your goal to become a fighter?

Pawel: At first I never thought I’d be fighting but after a year of training 6 days a week I told myself why not fight if I’m here training every day. So that’s how it begun.

MTA: Is going pro something you are planning to do?

Pawel: Yea I am planning on going pro very soon. I think I’m ready for it and whatever the future brings.

MTA: When can we expect to see you make your pro debut?

Pawel: Hopefully end of this year or beginning of the next. Time will tell.

MTA: What are your strengths that you think will help you in your transition to the pro ranks?

Pawel: The strengths that will help me transition are my consistency, dedication and power of will. Every time I train for a fight I make sure I put in work and that I train hard every day.

MTA: You recently won the Friday Night Fights 8 man tournament. Can you describe to us the tournament atmosphere and how you felt after winning the tournament?

Pawel: The atmosphere in the room was incredible. Winning in front of my home town crowd and to be the first New Yorker to do so was epic.

MTA: What are your future goals in Muay Thai?

Pawel: The main goal is to be “the best in the world”.

MTA: What do you think will be the biggest adjustment going from amateur to pro when you make that step?

Pawel: The biggest adjustment definitely the different pace, longer rounds, tougher competition that means train even harder. Besides that everything is pretty much the same.

MTA: Who are some of your favorite fighters?

Pawel: There is a few Ernesto Hoost, Ramon Dekkers, Robin van Roosmalen, Tyrone Spong, Saenchai.

Friday Night Fights: Hlavacek vs. Clarke Results

Friday Night Fights took place this past weekend in New York, NY. The main event on the evening featured a WBC Muay Thai title fight between current WBC Muay Thai US National Super Middleweight champion Brett Hlavacek and challenger Elijah Clarke.

Hlavacek and Clarke fought five hard rounds, in the end Hlavacek walk away victorious with a unanimous decision. Clarke tasted defeat for the first time in his professional career and is now 4-1.

In the night’s co-main event Justin Greskiewicz scored a stoppage victory over New York fan favorite Joe Sampieri. The stoppage came in the third round after Greskiewicz connected with an uppercut. With the win Greskiewicz walked away with a WBC Muay Thai US National Welterweight Championship.

Friday Night Fights: Greskiewicz vs. Sampieri set for August 14 in New York

Friday Night Fights will be back in action on August 14th at the Modern in New York. The event will feature the first WBC Muay Thai title fight in New York. In the main event current WBC Muay Thai Welterweight International Champion Justin Greskiewicz will put his title on the line against New York’s Joseph Sampieri. This fight will pit two seasoned veterans against each other, both have proven their toughness on several occasions and their willingness to exchange without backing up should lead to an exciting fight for fans.

In the co-main event Brett Hlavacek and Elijah Clarke will fight for the WBC New York State Title. Hlavacek has faced some of the best fighters in the states and continuously found success, he is easily the stiffest test of Clarke’s young career. Coming into the fight Clark is 4-0 as a pro and will be looking to continue his early career success, a win over Hlavacek would certainly put America’s Muay Thai scene on notice.

Rami Ibrahim vs. Joe Marchand Tipping set as main event for Friday Night Fights season opener

Friday Night Fights will kick off 2015 with their season opener on January 23rd at the Broad Street Ballroom in New York. The main event will feature Philadelphia’s Rami Ibrahim looking to defend his WKA 135lb North American Title against Canada’s Joe Marchand Tipping.

Ibrahim and Tipping are both veterans in the North American fight scene and should provide fight fans with a solid technical fight. Ibrahim has fought not only in Muay Thai, but MMA and Boxing. He is known for having some of the best hands in the North American Muay Thai scene. Tipping has fought primarily for Friday Night Fights in the past few years having mixed results.

Brett Hlavacek vs. Stephen Richards set for main event at Friday Night Fights 2014 Season Finale

The Friday Night Fights 2014 Season Finale takes place this upcoming Friday at the Broad Street Ballroom in New York. Two of the East coast’s best will be going toe-to-toe in the main event, Brett Hlavacek vs. Stephen Richards will serve as the night’s headlining bout.

This should be a technical fight as both Richards and Hlavacek are known for their technical prowess. Hlavacek has built a name for himself with his strong clinch game while Richards has put people on notice with his excellent boxing skills. The fight between Hlavacek and Richards was originally scheduled a decade ago when Hlavacek was still in his teens, but an injury forced the bout to be cancelled. It was again rumored a few years ago, but once again the fight fell through. Now it seems that nothing can prevent this fight from happening on Friday.

Friday Night Fights: Hasanov vs. Fagan set for October 17

Friday Night Fights returns on October 17 at the Broad Street Ballroom. New York’s longest running Muay Thai promotion will feature a main event bout between Sean Fagan and Turan Hasanov.

Fagan and Hasanov have both earned their reputations in the ring because of their press forward style. Fight fans should be excited because this one has fire works written all over it.

Fagan is known by many in the Muay Thai community as the Muay Thai Guy. He recently spent that better part of the year in Thailand training and fighting and this will be his first fight in the United States since his return. The fight will also serve as Fagan’s pro debut after a successful amateur career.

Friday Night Fights Results: Kwiatkowski stops Martinez

Friday Night Fights took place once again this past Friday in New York. The main event for the night featured Chris Kwiatkowski against veteran James Martinez. Kwiatkowski scored (T)KO victory over Martinez in the third round due to leg kicks. With the win Kwiatkowski has now won three consecutive fights.

In other action Elijah Clarke continued to impress as he scored a unanimous decision over Georgui Smaguin, and Quinton O’Brien defeated Ariel Sepulveda by split decision.

Chris Kwiatkowski vs. James Martinez set for Friday Night Fights September 19th event in New York

Friday Night Fights has announced that the main event for their September 19th New York fight card will be Chris Kwiatkowski vs. James Martinez. The fight card will also feature two additional pro fights that are Ariel Sepulvida vs. Quinton O’Brien and Elijah Clarke vs. Georgui Smaguin.

Kwiatkowski will return to action for the first time since January when he defeated Justin Greskiewicz by decision at the Friday Night Fights season opener. Martinez a Muay Thai veteran has become a journey man in the past few years and will be looking to play spoiler to Kwiatkowski in front of the Polish Punisher’s home crowd.

Friday Night Fights: Palacios vs. Greskiewicz Results

Friday Night Fights took place last night at the Broad Street Ballroom in New York, NY with Jose Palacios and Justin Greskiewicz serving as the main event. Palacios came out looking good as he was firing his strikes with accuracy, but as is with the art of eight limbs things can end in a split second. A quick sneaky elbow by Greskiewicz connected and opened up a decent size gash on the eyebrow of Palacios. The referee stopped the fight in the first round awarding Greskiewicz the (T)KO victory.

In other action Eddie Martinez picked up a win over Villi Bello. Coming into the fight Bello had won his last two fights and was looking to make it three consecutive wins, but Martinez would not allow that to happen. Bello couldn’t get into any kind of rhythm and get things flowing, Martinez on the other hand was pick his shots and control the fight. In the end the decision was awarded to Martinez.

Jose Palacios vs. Justin Grewskiewicz set as main event for Friday Night Fights May 16th fight card

Friday Night Fights will once again take place at the Broad Street Ballroom in New York, NY. The May 16th event will feature a headlining bout that will pit Jose Palacios against Justin Greskiewicz. Both Greskiewicz and Palacios are some of North America’s most respected fighters.

Greskiewicz will try to shake of a razor thin decision loss to Chris Kwiatkowski in his previous Friday Night Fights appearance. Palacios will also be looking to get back on the winning track after having dropped decisions in his last two outings.

In the night’s co-main event Villi Bello will look to make it three consecutive wins when he takes on Eddie Martinez. Both fighters have shown they have exciting styles and Martinez has recently been featured on several Yokkao shows against international talent. It should prove to be an exciting fight between both of these fighters as neither seem to hold anything back in the ring.
