Muay Thai Grand Prix 7 Results

Muay Thai Grand Prix 7 took place this past Saturday at the O2 Arena in London, England.

Three Muay Thai Grand Prix titles were on the line at the event and two of the three ended inside the distance.

Charlie Peters continued his recent tear by defending his MTGP welterweight title with a fourth round stoppage of Greece’s Theo Michailidis. Peters nearly had the fight over in the third round. Michailidis had been worn down by Peters and as the round was coming to an end a left hook to the body, followed by a downward elbow and a jumping knee hurt Michailidis and the referee was forced to step in and give him a standing eight count. He survived to make it to the fourth round, but it wouldn’t be long before it was over.

Michailidis came out looking to rally early in the fourth round but was met with a few downward elbows from Peters to slow him down. Near the one minute mark of the round another left to the body followed by a kick forced the referee to issue another standing eight count. As the action resumed Michailidis stumbled to his corner and Peters rushed in with another punch before the referee stepped in and called off the fight.

Iman Barlow and Therese Gunnarsson put on a great fight for everyone watching, but Barlow was clearly a step ahead the entire fight. Her full arsenal was on display as she controlled the pace of the fight. It seemed things would go the distance as Gunnarsson proved to be resilient, but in the fifth round Gunnarsson fell to the canvas after eating a few knees from Barlow in the clinch the referee initiated a count and then stopped the fight. Barlow added another title to her impressive collection. This time the MTGP women’s bantamweight title.

In the night’s third title fight Jose Varela and Rung Kharnphan went toe-to-toe for the MTGP super featherweight title. The 46 year old rung showed he was still a game opponent, but despite a great effort Varela was just a step ahead. The man known as “The Pitbull” started to take over as the fight wore on and punished Rung with hard shots. When it was over Varela won a unanimous decision and the title.
