Krav Maga is a martial art that was created for use by the Israeli defense and security forces.
Unlike other martial arts, Krav Maga was designed to be used in actual combat. Other martial arts get criticized for not being usable in real life situations. That is not the case for Krav Maga. It was created by combining elements from Boxing, Wrestling, Aikido, Judo, and Karate. The sole purpose of Krav Maga is to be used in real-world situations.
In countries like the United States, it is not uncommon to see Krav Maga studios. It is a very popular form of self-defense, but not many people will ever be put into a situation where they need to showcase what they have been taught. Even soldiers probably don’t expect to use it outside of military combat. For Sergeant Kfir Itzhaki having to use his Krav Maga skills outside of military combat became a real situation when he was caught in the middle of a terrorist attack.
Itzhaki is the former chief Krav Maga instructor for the Israeli Defense Forces, known as the IDF. On November 2, 2015, his skill set was put to the test. A terrorist attack was taking place at the bus station he was driving by. A knife-wielding man was attacking civilians. Realizing it was a terrorist attack, Itzhaki stepped up to stop it.
Kfir Itzhaki now runs a successful Krav Maga program.
There was no hesitation on his part as he jumped out of his car and ran towards the situation. A civilian pointed at the terrorist and Itzhaki immediately gave chase. He was able to get the terrorist to look back at him and not focus on anyone else. Itzhaki quickly kicked the terrorist who then proceded to enter a store. Inside the store, the terrorist stabbed the store clerk before Itzkhaki entered. Once inside the man attempted to attack him with the knife as well. It didn’t take long before Itzhaki took control of the situation by disarming him and then choking him out.
That is a true hero. When there is danger he runs toward it not away. As you can see in the footage below there is not one second of hesitation or doubt in himself. It is almost as if his natural instinct kicked in and fear vanished.
Itzhaki was asked in his interview about the woman that was wounded. He ran past her to pursue the terrorist at which point Itzhaki made it clear that you must first eliminate the threat.
“First objective in combat is to neutralize the object, neutralize the terrorist and then go to the wounded. They are not being examined. Not in the first stage.”
For his valiant effort, his was awarded a medal by the local police. He has gone on to gain notoriety in his home country because of his selfless act and his Instinct – Integrated Israeli Combatives system. It is described as the ultimate integration of tested Krav-Maga skills
This is not to say that anyone who has ever trained in any martial arts should immediately seek to do the same in similar situations. He happened to be the perfect person for this because of his training and skill. A lesser martial artist could have easily been hurt even killed.
