Boxing seems to have a new mega fight taking place this year! Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder!
Yes, you read right Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder is the fight that every Boxing fan wants to see. It now seems we are one step closer to it happening. One of the biggest points of contention between the two is where the fight would take place. Each fighter wanted the fight to take place in their home country. Joshua in the United Kingdom and Wilder in the United States. Now it seems this one is heading to the United Kingdom.
It looks as if Wilder has agreed to an offer from Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn. The fight would take place in the United Kingdom with a potential rematch in the United States.
According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael:
Deontay Wilder has accepted the terms offered to him by Anthony Joshua promoter Eddie Hearn for them to meet in the United Kingdom for the undisputed heavyweight championship this fall, Shelly Finkel, Wilder’s co-manager, told ESPN on Monday night. “We have agreed to the terms that Eddie has put out to us for a fight in the U.K.. Deontay has accepted his terms to fight in the U.K. Deontay sent an email to Joshua (Sunday) night and I sent one today to Barry Hearn and Eddie telling them that we officially accept the offer to fight under the terms they gave us and to send us the contract,” Finkel said. Finkel said that the offer is a two-fight deal with terms also agreed to for a rematch that would take place in the United States.
With the deal seemingly in place now, all that Wilder needs to do is sign the contract. For fans of heavyweight Boxing, this is a huge fight. Not only because it is pitting two fo the best heavyweights in the world right now. After this fight, you can bet that talks about the winner fighting Tyson Furry will heat up.
Tyson Fury vs. the winner will set up another huge mega fight.
Joshua is 21-0 as a pro with 20 of his wins coming by way of knockout. His biggest win to date has been his 2017 TKO victory over Waldimir Klitschko. The former Olympic gold medalist is currently the IBF, WBO, IBO heavyweight champion and the WBA super heavyweight champion. He has yet to fight outside of the United Kingdom in any of his 21 professional fights.
Wilder is 40-0 as a pro with 39 of those wins coming by way of knockout. Some of his biggest wins include stoppages of Chris Arreola and Luis Ortiz. Like Joshua, none of Wilder’s pro fights have taken place outside of his home country. He is currently the WBC heavyweight champion.
This fight has a lot at stake. Both men are undefeated and country pride is on the line. We have never seen a such a big Boxing match between the UK and the USA. Bragging rights will definitely be at stake in this one. With Fury lurking in the shadows, it will be a precursor to another huge PPV fight. The question will be if that fight will be UK vs. UK or UK vs. USA.
With this fight all but set, Boxing will receive a huge boost. The most recent attempt at a big Boxing fight failed when Canelo vs. GGG did not go through. As everyone knows by now Canelo was busted for steroids after according to his team he had “tainted meat” from Mexico.
